1890 Decorated Side Chairs – JJ Kohn – Austria 1890 Decorated Simple Elegant Bentwood Dining Chairs – JJ Kohn – Austria. This set of chairs was made by the Teschen workshop of Jacob and Josef Kohn, contemporary competitors to Thonet, a simple elegant shape they are totally original. Kohn was one of the leading bentwood producers in Austria – Hungary. Jacob Josef Kohn, also known as J. J. Kohn, was an Austrian furniture maker and interior designer in Vienna. Jacob Kohn (1791-1866) together with his son Josef Kohn (1814-1884) founded the company in 1849. Kohn merged with Mundus in 1914, which in turn merged with Gebrüder Thonet in 1921 to become the world’s largest furniture manufacturer. After the brothers deaths at the end of the 19th Century Kohn merged with their other competitor Mundus in 1914. We know these chairs are 19th Century as the are not branded Mundus, they are diminutive in scale and the design is very much late 19th Century. Rare survivors of the original Kohn production. The chairs are of exceptional original condition and colour with untouched construction using hand cut screws and forged nuts. All of our vintage products show the rich beauty and history of their life with the knocks and bumps of many years of use and we try to minimise restoration to keep every piece as original as possible.
