Wonderful vintage MCM or Mid-Century Modern bentwood 1300 Series dining armchairs with original maroon hopsacking upholstery and newly ebonized frames by Bill Stephens for Knoll set of 5. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. Two chairs have been reglued and two chairs have a different weave in the fabric. Fabric has been shampooed and the wood frames have been restored with a black finish; but they still retain a few age-appropriate nicks and dings. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1961-1969.
Move over Marvel… We have the real FANTASTIC FIVE!!! This is a GORGEOUS set of five 1300 Series bentwood chairs by famed designer Bill Stephens for Knoll!! The 1300 Series chairs were designed by Bill Stephens in 1967 and featured a bentwood frame supporting a molded plastic seat. This particular set of 5 frames is comprised of a fabulous bent plywood with a new black dyed finish. Three of the molded plastic seats are upholstered in a maroon hopsacking upholstery (we believe these to have been reupholstered) and two with a maroon fabric but with a different weave. They’re FABULOUS! They are circa 1961-1969 labeled with Knoll Associates, Inc., 320 Park Avenue tags. Use them at your dining table and enjoy a comfortable, long leisurely dinner with family and friends! Or, they would be wonderful at a game table, breakfast nook, around a conference table at the office, or as convenient and stylish extra seating in any room. Wherever you choose to use them, be ready for one of the most ergonomically comfortable chairs you have ever experienced.
Bill Stephens born 1932 in Pennsylvania and graduated from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. He began his career with Knoll as an assistant prototype builder in 1960 for their Design and Development Group. After working up the ranks he became its director in 1971. He spear-headed and worked on the creation and development of many projects and products during his time as director including several where he was the principal designer. His greatest were his part in the Petitt chair which was not only beautiful but an achievement in technology and construction; his own 1300 Series or Stephens Chair which was originally designed for the student center at the Yale School of Architecture and remained in production at Knoll until 1988; and his contribution in the first wood landscape systems created along with Skidmore, Owings
Merrill to be used in their Weyerhaeuser headquarters project. Stephens passed in 2007.

Knoll
As a company that produced many of the most famous and iconic furniture designs of the 20th century, Knoll was a chief influence in the rise of modern design in the United States. Led by Florence Knoll, the firm would draw stellar talents such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen into its compass. Their work would help change the face of the American home and office.
The company was formed in 1938 by the German immigrant Hans Knoll. He first worked with his fellow ex-pat, the Danish designer Jens Risom, who created furniture with flowing lines made of wood. While Risom served in World War II, in 1943 Knoll met his future wife, Florence Schust. She had studied and worked with eminent emigré leaders of the Bauhaus, including Mies, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. She won Knoll over with Bauhaus notions of industrial arts, and an aesthetic that featured flat and tubular metal frames and angular forms. When Hans died in a car crash in 1955, Florence Knoll was appointed head of the company. It was as much through her holistic approach to design — a core division of the firm was dedicated to planning office systems — as Knoll's mid-century modern furnishings themselves that she brought about the sleek and efficient transformation of the American workplace.
Today, classic Knoll furnishings remain staples of modern design collections and decor. A history of modern design is written in pieces such as the elegant Barcelona chair — created by Mies and Lilly Reich — Saarinen’s pedestal Tulip chair, Breuer’s tubular steel Wassily lounge chair and the grid-patterned Diamond chair by Harry Bertoia.

As a designer, Michael McCoy is best known for his work with furniture manufacturer Knoll International. Along with Dale Fahnstrom, Fahnstrom/McCoy Design Consultants designed the 5-time award-winning Bulldog chair. The Bulldog is Knoll's best-selling office chair to date. Michael McCoy along with his wife Katherine McCoy was the recipient of the Smithsonian’s first Design Minds National Design Award. His designs include the Horizon LED Light for Humanscale with Peter Stathis, the million selling “Bulldog Chair” for Knoll and the Place Airport Seating for Arconas with Curt Fentress. He has received many international design awards for his work for Humanscale, Knoll, Philips, Steelcase and NEC including Germany’s Red Dot Award, the IDSA Gold Award, The Spark Award, London’s FX Award, the ID Magazine Best of Category, the IBD Award and The Interiors Magazine Best Office Design. He was principal in McCoy & McCoy Inc. in Colorado and Fahnstrom/McCoy Design Consultants in Chicago, he was Co-chair of the Design Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art for 23 years. His strategies for interpreting technology and information through design form have been widely published and he lectures internationally on the subject.
Dale Fahnstrom graduated with a BFA and MFA in Industrial Design, in 1962 and 1965, from the University of Illinois, Champaign. Early in his career Fahnstrom was product designer for Unimark International. He co-founded the Chicago design firms Source, Inc. and Design Planning Group, and designed products for firms such as Knoll International, Philips Electronics N.V., Steelcase, Brayton International, Vecta Contract...

Excellent set of eight black Torsion dining chairs designed by Giancarlo Piretti for KI. There are seven arm chairs and one side chair. They are in wonderful vintage condition with minor wear that you would expect with age. Please see photos, circa 1995.
In 1997 Giancarlo Piretti received an award for his Torsion seating collection. These chairs are part of that collection. Designed and made initially and primarily for commercial purpose they are extremely comfortable and flexible. They are lightweight and stackable. This set has an attractive textured high impact black plastic seat, back, and arms on chrome legs. No one expects this chair have the comfort it provides. The back flexes. This flex is achieved with the torsion mechanism which creates gradually increasing resistance. They were designed for comfort during long meetings or lectures. But, that makes them perfect for long dinners with lots of conversation. Or, family night with puzzles, cards, and games.
The designer, Giancarlo Piretti, was born in Bologna Italy in 1940. He attended art schools there and subsequently taught Interior Design. During that time, he was also designing furniture for Anonima Castelli. He has won numerous awards and has items in many museums including MoMA New York. He still lives and works in Bologna with is son, designer Alessandro Piretti.
