About the Item

Bas van Pelt for My Home, set of six dining chairs, solid oak, velvet, the Netherlands, 1940s These dining chairs, designed by Bas van Pelt in the 1940s, reflect a subtle fusion of architectural clarity and domestic warmth. Crafted from oak and reupholstered in a green-blue fabric, the design leans into a restrained modernism; a language of simplicity and function, yet never sterile. The chairs are immediately characterized by their tall, gently inclined backs. Each backrest is composed of evenly spaced vertical spindles, lending the chair a kind of upright, almost ecclesiastical presence. The rhythm of these wooden rods, firm but graceful, creates a visual continuity from floor to head, drawing the eye upward and giving the design a sense of vertical lift. This upright geometry is tempered by the angle of the backrest, which leans slightly to accommodate the human form. The seat itself is a generous, square plane, thickly upholstered in a pale wool. The legs, broad and slightly tapered, form a stable base and are connected by low stretchers. This set, when seen together, has a sense of repetition and seriality that makes you think of the way Dutch interiors often balance order with warmth. Bastiaan Johannes van Pelt (1900-1945) was a Dutch furniture designer and interior designer. As son of a book printer, he spend his time after school working in several printing companies in Holland. At that time he already engaged in topics like designing furniture, interiors, carpets and fabrics, graphic work and pottery. In 1927, he quit his old job and started to work at a furniture factory owned by his father-in-law J.C. Jansen in Overschie. Together with his brother-in-law, Jan Jansen, they produced various designs for furniture which were manufactured in series. During the first half of the 1930s, Van Pelt created a number of designs for tubular steel furniture, which were manufactured by the company D3 and E.M.S. Overschie. During this period, his designs evoke a strong resemblance to the ethos of the iconic Bauhaus. Simplicity and functionality were the core values within this movement, and Van Pelt managed to create furniture according to them, by the application of tubular steel, simple geometric forms, and materials which facilitated mass production. After 1938, Van Pelt turned away from the functionalist mindset and began designing in the style of the ‘Delfste school’, which was more engaged in historical shapes and traditional manufacturing methods. Van Pelt always dreamed of having his own business and he did not hesitate when he got the opportunity to take over the store ‘My Home woninginrichting’ located on ‘De Lange Houtstraat’ in The Hague, in 1931. He transformed the store into a thriving company in the field of modern home furnishings. It functioned primarily as a show room where he exhibited a selected range of modern furniture and upholstery accessories. For instance, his collections consisted of specifically metal furniture and lamps by D3, E.M.S. Overschie, and Thonet in combination with his own designs. The success of the store resulted in opening three more showrooms in Maastricht (1934), Enschede (1936) and, Amsterdam (1938). His clientele consisted of the wealthy bourgeoisie and middle class, and in particular of lawyers and doctors. Diplomats who visited the royal city for a while, had the possibility to rent furniture from his store. Bas van Pelt decided to actively participate during World War Two. His country house ‘De Pal’ in Emst served as a depot for ammunition and a hiding place between 1943 and 1945. Architect and industrial designer Willem Hendrik Gispen (1890-1981) arrived at Van Pelt’s place to hide from the Germans after he got released. From May 1944, he was imprisoned for a whole year in various concentration camps. On May 24, 1945, a few days after his liberation, Van Pelt died at the age of 44 in Stalag XB, a concentration camp near Hamburg. Van Pelt's successful design studio and interior store with various branches, has been taken over by his wife, and later their daughter.

Upholstered Armchair by Bas Van Pelt for My Home, The Netherlands 1940s
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Utrecht, NL
This elegant armchair by Dutch designer, Bas Van Pelt is a classically luxe model with a level of craftsmanship that’s immediately visible to any eye. The construction of this rare 1940s design is simple at its core, but thanks to the details, it is a unique representation of early Dutch modernism. While Bas Van Pelt's creative work was primarily influenced by the 1920s straight lines dominated by The Hague School, this armchair is the result of his more mature design era, which was primarily dominated by natural materials and more curvature. While made of solid wood, this armchair has an open feel to it thanks to the airy arrangement of the arms and legs. The curved lines of the armrests are beautifully crafted and follow the raised seat’s angle. The curves nicely contrast with the straight lines of the frame, keeping it from appearing too strict. Apart from the expert woodwork, the upholstered seat and back stand out as well. The light bouclé fabric is tightly fitted around the frame, and the seat’s thick shape is an especially pleasing element that offers plenty of comfort both figuratively and literally. The overreaching backs further enhance the back’s widening shape and thus allow the individual loops of the yarn to stand out. The block legs blend seamlessly into the back and form a gentle angle. Thanks to the well-chosen proportions and the luxurious upholstery, this armchair provides great comfort. This model can be easily used as an accent chair thanks to its characteristic details, but can also complement a wide variety of interior styles with it refined and elegant style. Bas van Pelt’s progressive designs were, in many ways, ahead of his era. The Dordrecht-born designer’s furniture models are quite rare, a few are preserved in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for modern art, contemporary art, and design. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information.
