FINE SET OF EIGHT ENGLISH REGENCY MAHOGANY DINING CHAIRS Circa 1810-20, All Chairs Stamped "H.I" to back rail Item # 1502KQT22A A quite rare find, this full set of eight matched English Regency period dining chairs feature the bold scrolling lines of the Greco-Roman styles. Known as a "klismo" chair, this sabre-legged form embodies the taste for Classicism during the early 19th Century. The six side chairs are completed with a pair of arm chairs with fully scrolled arms, these incredibly bold and full of life. The crest rails are solid mahogany with applied scroll carvings on either side. The upholstery, which should be changed to match your dining room before use, is stuffed over the rail to leave only a little over an inch of mahogany veneer showing around the skirt. All chair undersides are left uncovered, revealing the replaced blocking and much of the original diagonal blocking, these rectangular blocks set at a 45-degree angle into triangular notches in the rails. The back of each chair is stamped from an unknown craftsman, "H.I." Any collector familiar with the period will quickly recognize that this form of chair rarely comes on the market in full sets of eight. The chairs have such life and movement that they easily and interestingly blend with any of the more angular and austere styles, fitting well with Neoclassical furniture as well as many more modern forms. This is an investment grade set of chairs that will certainly be a cherished part of your dining room for a lifetime. Measurements: [arm chairs] 20 1/2" W x 34" H x 23" D; 18 1/4" H to seat Condition Report: Old surface with a high level of oxidization and wear, probably not original but very old with a wonderful patina. All chairs are very sturdy and strong, all chairs having seen significant repairs over the years. These are more clearly visible in the slideshow of 81 pictures on our primary website: one back seat rail appears to have been flipped by the craftsman at time of construction (last picture in slideshow); several chairs with added pegs for corner strength; all chairs with replaced blocking, though some still do retain a few diagonal blocks set in triangular slots in rails; several legs repaired with splicing, reglued cracks, screws from the back, etc. as is shown in the images; old cracks and repairs to the arms of the arm chairs, one arm chair with an L bracket repair to the front right leg, the other arm chair with a repaired crack along the grain of the left leg; applied scrolls on several crests damaged or missing.
