Set of 12 Henri II / Renaissance style caned oak dining room chairs from the Neo-Renaissance period.
The seats are entirely made of cane in good condition, the canage.
The backs of the chairs are richly carved with architectural motifs, mainly columns, in scale.
France - 19th
French Renaissance furniture is directly inspired by the decorative arts of the Italian quattrocento born in the 15th century. The extreme richness of the beautiful wooden sculptures characterizes this new French style with its still stiff forms. Carpenters, sculptors and architects borrow its varied ornamentation from antiquity. The shapes take up the architectural elements of the column, pilaster, cornice and pediment. Arabesques, foliage, grotesques and bas-relief medallions with mythological scenes or portraits cover the facades and uprights of French Renaissance furniture.
The Henry II style extends from 1550 to 1589. It includes the end of the reign of Francis I, the reigns of Henry II (1519-1559), Francis II (1559-1560), Charles IX (1560-1574) and ends with the death of Henry III in 1589.
With his wife, the Italian Catherine de Medici, Henri II favored the development of the pure French antique style. The carpenter thinks of the piece of furniture as a whole, like a small building of classic architecture.
