About the Item

Gae Aulenti “Locus Solus” dining chairs for Poltronova, metal, Italy, 1964, set of eight Designed in 1964 by Gae Aulenti, the “Locus Solus” dining chairs are a vivid expression of Italy’s radical design movement during the 1960s. Characterized by a circular seat and a continuous tubular frame in bright black lacquered steel, these chairs are both sculptural and functional. The graphic interplay between the rounded structure and perforated metal seat reveals a tension between industrial materiality and playful composition—a hallmark of Aulenti’s multifaceted approach to design. Originally conceived for both indoor and outdoor use, the “Locus Solus” series reflects a moment when Italian design embraced color, irony, and experimentation, moving beyond functionalism to create pieces that redefined the domestic landscape. The collection, which also included loungers, sofas, and tables, embodies a visual language as exuberant as it is architectural. Gae Aulenti, one of the few prominent female voices in postwar Italian architecture and design, is best known internationally for transforming Paris’s Gare d’Orsay into the Musée d’Orsay, and for designing the iconic “Pipistrello” lamp. Her work often challenged conventions, blending theatricality with rigorous spatial logic. The formal language of the “Locus Solus” series resonates with contemporaries such as Joe Colombo, Paolo Deganello, and the Archizoom collective, all of whom contributed to the utopian and provocative spirit of the era. Today, these chairs are not only collector’s items but also visual manifestos—capturing a precise moment in history when design became a vehicle for cultural renewal. Afra Tobia Scarpa Black Leather 121 Dining Chair for Cassina, 1967, Set of 10
By Afra Tobia Scarpa, Cassina
Located in Vicenza, IT
Set of ten Model 121 dining chairs, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa and produced by the Italian manufacturer Cassina in 1967. They feature black leather upholstery and a walnut structure. Fully restored in Italy. Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed the 121 chair in 1965. A sketch from 1943 made by Carlo Scarpa (Tobia’s father) inspired its shape. Two thin plywood “petals” compose the seat and the backrest. They are available with leather upholstery or aniline-dyed. The back has cut in the lower part, required due to a reinforcement that reacts to torsion stress, which is strongest at this point. Furthermore, the basis is a solid wood double trestle. Eight screws link...
