About the Item

Set of ten dining chairs in oak from the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910), designed by George Montague Ellwood for J. S. Henry, c.1900. This cohesive group exemplifies British vernacular craftsmanship at the turn of the twentieth century, expressing the unity of design and function central to Ellwood’s practice. Formed as a complete dining suite, the set comprises eight side chairs and two armchairs, all constructed in solid oak with shaped top rails and slatted backs, the armchairs distinguished by gently curved supports. The seats are upholstered, supported on square legs united by stretchers to the sides and front, giving a balanced and compact stance appropriate to formal dining interiors. The restrained ornament and refined proportions align with Ellwood’s mature work for J. S. Henry, bridging the late Arts and Crafts vocabulary and the emerging Art Nouveau idiom that informed British design after 1900. The present set illustrates the collaborative ethos between designer and manufacturer that defined the period’s finest domestic furniture.
