About the Item

This set of six dining chairs, designed by Kwok Hoi Chan for Steiner France in 1970, epitomizes the daring and dynamic spirit of 1970s design. Known for his distinctive style, Chinese designer Kwok Hoi Chan created pieces that are immediately recognizable, breaking away from the strict conventions of modernism. His work from this era explores the qualities of various materials, employs pop colors, and features unique and symbolic forms which is directly visible in the design of these chairs. These chairs boast chrome-plated tubular steel frames with an open structure characterized by undulating lines, creating a striking visual impact which runs through the entire chair from fromt, side to back. The bulky, shapely seats are upholstered in original cognac leather, which has developed a stunning patina over time. This patina, with its characteristic craquelure, adds to the chairs' vintage charm, while the leather remains usable and the foam strong and firm. These chairs have a very unusual and specific form which recognizes their era immediately. The captivating interplay of curved lines and bold shapes imbues these chairs with a dynamic and visually compelling quality, making them a standout addition to any dining space. The chairs are in original condition, and while they show signs of wear that reflect their age and history, they remain intact and fully functional. The chrome plated metal shows wear, fading and small rusty spots where the upholstery shows cracks and discoloration. Kindly note that these chairs are priced and sold as a set of six. Kwok Hoi Chan (b. 1937) is a distinguished Chinese designer renowned for his innovative and distinctive approach to furniture design. His work, particularly from the 1970s, is celebrated for breaking away from the rigid conventions of modernism, embracing bold shapes, unconventional materials, and dynamic forms. Chan’s designs often feature striking combinations of materials and unique structural elements, reflecting his exploration of material qualities and symbolic aesthetics. His creations, including collaborations with prominent manufacturers like Steiner France, continue to be highly regarded for their originality and artistic impact. Just like all our upholstered pieces, these can be newly upholstered to your liking. Consult with our experienced upholstery department for a reasonable quote on customizing the item of your choice. We exclusively utilize premium quality fabrics, foam, and materials for all our products. During the reupholstery process, preserving the originality is our top priority to ensure the piece retains its value and remains ready for years of use ahead.
