About the Item

A set of six rare "Benedikte" mahogany chairs with pierced back. Seats upholstered with original black horsehair. The chair is one of Ole Wanschers most sought after designs. These examples made in the 1960s by cabinetmaker A. J. Iversen, with maker's paper label. The chairs got their name after a set was acquired by Her Royal Highness Danish Princess Benedikte. Model presented at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark, 1963. Literature: Grete Jalk [ed.]: “40 Years of Danish Furniture Design”, vol. 4, p. 238. Andreas Jeppe (A.J) Iversen (1888-1979) was a Danish cabinetmaker and furniture designer, who partially manufactured his own designs and partially collaborated with other architects and artists. He is today recognized as one of the main characters paving the way for the style later known as Danish Modern. Among his partnerships are characters such as Kaj Gottlob (1887-1976), Viggo Boesen (1907-85), Flemming (1902-84) and Mogens Lassen (1901-87) and in particular Ole Wanscher (1903-85), with whom he collaborated with throughout his life. Iversen realized some of Wanschers signature designs such as the Egyptian Stool and T-Chair.
