About the Item

Pair of Early 19th Century English Elm Country Chairs, Circa 1800–1820 A characterful pair of early 19th century English country chairs, dating to the George III period, circa 1800–1820. Predominantly constructed in elm, with typical mixed secondary timbers, each chair features a solid plank seat and a pierced splat back, offering a slightly more decorative variation on the traditional country chair form. Well proportioned and practical, the chairs retain an attractive, settled surface with good colour and grain, consistent with long use. The darker tone is entirely in keeping with utilitarian Georgian seating of this type, particularly where mixed timbers were employed, and contributes to their honest, workmanlike character. Suitable for use in a hall, kitchen, or informal dining setting. A full set of additional images is available on request. Dimensions (approximate): Height: 87 cm (34.25 in) Width: 48 cm (19 in) Depth: 47 cm (18.5 in) Seat height: 45.75 cm (18 in) Condition: Good original condition, structurally sound and sturdy with no loose joints. The chairs have been lightly cleaned and waxed, retaining their honest surface and period character, and are ready for immediate use. There are minor marks, blemishes and surface wear consistent with age and use. One chair has a small historic repair to the corner of a front foot. The other shows a few old, inactive worm holes to the front edge, precautionarily treated. One plank seat shows a slight lift to the back edge, typical of solid elm construction and left undisturbed to preserve originality; this does not affect use.
