About the Item

Colombo Sanguineti Sculptural dining chair, wood and straw, Italy, 1948 Paolo Buffa, celebrated architect and designer of the Italian mid-century movement, designed this unique set of ten Chiavarine dining chairs in 1948. Known for his refined sense of proportion and craftsmanship, Buffa here blends modernist clarity with neoclassical elegance. The chairs reflect Buffa’s dedication to artisanal excellence, a trait he shared with fellow masters such as Vittorio Dassi, Gio Ponti, Pierluigi Giordani, and others active during the 1940s and 1950s. This sculptural set captures the quiet sophistication that defines Italian design of the era. These dining chairs feature a distinctive ladder-backrest made of dark brown stained wood that reveals its natural grain, emphasizing the artisan’s hand. The slender fluted legs, connected by rounded stretchers, add structural lightness and grace. The seats, original of the period and restored by our in-house atelier, are handwoven in traditional natural straw, offering a warm tactile contrast to the polished wooden frame. The “Chiavarine” style, originally developed in Liguria, became an icon of Italian craftsmanship and was reinterpreted by many great designers of the time, including Buffa. Our atelier offers custom restoration and special reupholstering on request. Contact us to create the object you desire.
