About the Item

By Richard W. McNerney, cabinet maker of Liverpool, an Arts and Crafts ash armchair with a hammered copper tulip panel by the Hayle copper works of Cornwall, aligned to the Arts and Crafts Movement (c.1880–1910), c.1900. The tall rectangular back is framed by square capped uprights and four narrow vertical slats, giving the chair an architectural profile associated in style with Glasgow School and Baillie Scott interiors. The arms run forward in a straight line, then wrap inward to meet the back posts, a constructive detail that stiffens the frame and reinforces the chair’s quiet geometry. The broad ash seat shows the grain plainly, while the applied copper frieze introduces a single band of ornament, its repeating tulip buds hammered in low relief on a finely punched ground, typical of work from the Hayle metalworking shops in Cornwall. The frame stamped McNerney to the underside, combined with specialist Cornish copper, illustrates how regional cabinet makers collaborated with dedicated metal workshops to produce distinctive Arts and Crafts seating.
