About the Item
An exquisite set of 10 caned dining chairs, each frame was hand-carved from walnut wood in Italy, circa 1880. Each chair is a meticulously crafted work of art with intricate details, including a two-rail seatback adorned with rectangles framed by delicate cavetto and surrounded by an enchanting latticework of scrolls and volutes.
The front leg connector mirrors this exquisite carving, while the other connectors are unadorned blocks. Similarly, the skirt beneath the caning boasts a scrolled margent on all sides except the back, adding a touch of opulence. All four legs are blocked, with the front two showcasing segmented fluting embellishments that continue along the side rails of the seatbacks. Each rail culminates in a shaped finial, intricately detailed with crescent moon-like motifs. The chairs’ luscious brown patina, accentuated by a delicate French wax finish, exudes warmth and sophistication, while the caned seats provide comfort and style, and are gracefully encircled by sleek quarter-round molding, adding contour to the otherwise clean lines.

- Condition:Repaired: The caning on two chairs appears to have been completely reworked, with some smaller restoration to other chair seats. Wear consistent with age and use. Good, strong condition. Minor wear and rubs. At least two canings have existing restoration work. Some chairs with traces of old woodworm. Caning on one exhibiting stretching and wear (see photos). It is recommended to use seat cushions with caning.
