About the Item

Introducing a rare, expansive set of six visually captivating "Centennial" dining chairs designed by the iconic design duo of Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougal for the lauded Drexel Furniture Co. Taking inspiration from previous designs by George Nakashima and incorporating elements of English Windsor design this set of "Centennial" arm chairs feature intricate woodworking techniques, exquisite details like solid brass fasteners and a solid walnut composition that is bristling with mesmerizing woodgrains throughout. Kipp Stewart, who recently passed in 2022, is an American Icon who's work as a furniture designer, artist and architect has been widely respected and venerated throughout the US and abroad. After working with the renowned industrial designers Charles and Bernice “Ray” Eames, Stewart went on to design furniture of a mid-century modern aesthetic for Drexel Heritage out of North Carolina, Directional Furniture through the Modernage Company in New York, and Summit Furniture of Monterey. The Drexel Furniture Co. began over a hundred years ago in Hickory, North Carolina with a single product and a simple vision. The product was a made-to-order dining chair. In the decades since, their product range has evolved into an assortment of timeless designs, drawn from significant periods and places, and from the talents of some of the world's most respected designers such as the aforementioned Kipp Stewart. Drexel is still producing pieces to this day with much reverence given to their craftsmanship and use of natural materials. The perfect amalgamation of Mid-Century Modern and Classical Shaker/Windsor designs, this set of two armchairs with matching four side chairs is equal parts comfort and style. Though these chairs show some signs of vintage wear this visually captivating set is ideal for collectors searching for an authentic set of vintage "Centennial" chairs that have been left in 100% original condition or for designers who are looking to have a set restored for their client. Buy them as is or have our team restore them, either way - make them yours today before they're gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Width: 21 in / 53.34 cm Depth: 19 in / 48.26 cm Height: 32.25 in / 81.92 cm Seat Height: 18 in / 45.72 cm Arm Height: 26.5 in / 67.31 cm This stunning set of "Centennial" Windsor-styled chairs is in 100% original, vintage condition. The solid walnut composition does show some signs of vintage wear such as scratches, one gouge and nicks and scuffs (all of which can be seen in the detail photos provided). With that said the wood is in over all very good shape and the American walnut woodgrains are absolutely arresting in natural light. As purists, we strive to leave all of our pieces in as original condition as possible. However we do offer restoration services and a full carpentry shop which can professionally sand and refinish the walnut on each chair included in the sale price. If this option interests you please message us prior to checkout as this service can require up to 12-14 days of lead time. This gorgeous set of "Centennial" is ultra-comfortable, structurally sound and ready for decades more of use. Please view all photos and natural light video provided for details on this set's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so we recommend requesting additional photos and videos for a comprehensive view of this set's condition.

By Norman Cherner, Plycraft
Located in Deland, FL
As rare as they are visually stunning this extraordinary set of chairs, first designed by the iconic Norman Cherner in 1958, has recently undergone a comprehensive and transformative restoration offering a modern twist to the classic design. Considered a pioneer in molded plywood, Norman Cherner used this method to create a line of seating for Plycraft that led to his famous "Cherner Chair." This model chair is found in design collections throughout the world, including the Vitra Design Museum and the Cherner Chair is still regarded as one of the most dramatic designs utilizing the technology of molding plywood. The Cherner side chair utilizes a molded plywood seat with a unique construction of laminated walnut plywood in graduated thickness. The seats and backs are designed using a single shell connected by a slim and sturdy neck upholstered in new black vinyl nearly identical to the original material all set atop a set of slender, powder-coated metal legs. Stamped "October 31st, 1963" and retaining the original Plycraft tags these one of a kind dining chairs...
