About the Item

A rare custom-order set of seven Finnish dining chairs from the ’Näyttely’ series, designed by Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs. The chairs feature painted wooden frames with straight, architectural legs and upholstered seats. The backrests are executed in a woven leather strap construction, carefully wrapped around the frame, creating a strong graphic rhythm and a warm material contrast against the light structure. The leather shows a natural, even patina, while the seats retain their original textile upholstery, with some fading and small marks consistent with age and use. This set represents an uncommon factory-made variation from the 1960s. While most ’Näyttely’ chairs were originally produced in natural wood tones, this set was painted white at the time of manufacture by customer request, making it a rare configuration within the series. The chairs were produced by Huonekalu Mikko Nupponen Oy, a Finnish maker known for solid craftsmanship and limited mid-century production. Hiort af Ornäs, trained as an architect, approached furniture through structure, proportion, and function—principles clearly present in this model. An exceptional dining set that brings both character and Nordic design heritage to a space. Around a dining table, the chairs read as a cohesive whole; used individually, the expressive woven backs stand out on their own. The original upholstery adds an authentic, lived-in presence, and the straightforward construction makes reupholstering easy if a different look is desired in the future. • Width: 45 cm • Depth: 50 cm • Height: 83 cm • Seat height: 45 cm • Material: Painted wood, woven leather straps, textile upholstery • Model: ’Näyttely’ • Designer: Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs • Manufacturer: Huonekalu Mikko Nupponen Oy • Period: 1960s • Origin / Country: Finland • Condition: Good vintage condition with light wear to the painted frames; woven leather backs show natural patina and minor variations consistent with age and use; original upholstery shows some fading and small marks but is overall well preserved NOTE ON THE DESIGNER – Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs (1911–1996) was a Finnish architect and designer whose work forms an important part of post-war Finnish modernism. Working across architecture, furniture, and interiors, he emphasized clarity of form, functional solutions, and thoughtful material use. His furniture designs—often produced in small numbers—are today considered collectible examples of Finnish design heritage.
