About the Item
These richly carved chairs are excellent examples of late 19th-century to early 20th-century Renaissance Revival seating, most likely produced in France or Northern Europe during the height of the historicist revival period. The tall, architectural backs are deeply carved with classical and grotesque motifs, including scrolling acanthus foliage, floral rosettes, shell elements, and a dramatic central mascaron or grotesque face at the crest rail—an ornamental device commonly associated with Renaissance and Baroque revival furniture. The level of carving suggests skilled hand workmanship rather than later machine-assisted production, with strong dimensionality and crisp detailing throughout.
The frames appear to be crafted from a dense hardwood, likely oak, finished in a deep and dark warm patina that accentuates the relief carving and emphasizes age and authenticity. The turned stiles and legs, along with the ball-turned stretchers and perimeter apron details, reinforce the historic European lineage and lend the chairs a stately, architectural presence. Each chair retains a woven cane seat, most likely later replaced, which provides a pleasing material contrast to the dark wood and adds visual lightness while remaining period-appropriate. The cane presents well overall and contributes to the chairs’ continued usability as functional seating.
Stylistically, these chairs bridge Renaissance Revival, Baroque Revival, and Gothic Revival influences, making them highly versatile for both traditional and eclectic interiors. They would be equally compelling placed as formal dining chairs, accent or hall chairs, or as statement pieces in a library, study, or grand entry. The dramatic backs also make them ideal for decorative use in hospitality, retail, or staging environments where visual impact is essential. Their scale and sculptural quality allow them to function as individual works of art as much as seating furniture.
Condition is consistent with age and use, with visible surface wear, patina variation, and minor imperfections that speak to their history and authenticity rather than detract from their appeal. The carving remains strong and intact, and the overall construction is solid and stable. These chairs embody the romantic historicism of the late 19th century and offer collectors and designers an opportunity to acquire highly decorative, period European seating with enduring presence and character.
MEASUREMENTS:
H 45.5" x W 21" x D 21.75"
Seat Height (with cushion): 20.5"
Seat Height (without cushion): 17.5"

CONDITION:
Overall very good antique condition ready for immediate use. If you wish to use the cushions, reupholstery is advised as the fabric has moderate age, fading and wear. Caning is in very good condition with light age and wear. Wood has some areas with loss of color (stain) and other age related wear. These are antique chairs so each part of each chair exhibits age and light antiquing, heavier in some areas such as the bottom of legs and corners of seats. Can be refinished upon request. Ready for immediate use in a vintage or antique acceptable setting.

View AllImportant Pierre Patout Mahogany Dining Chairs from S.S. Île de France, c. 1927
By Pierre Patout
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This set of important Pierre Patout open arm chairs were from the first class dining room on board of the S.S. Île de France, circa 1927. With excellent provenance, this exact set was previously sold at Christie's New York on June 1, 2006 during their Ocean Liner Furnishings and Art auction as Lot 286. As seen in the last photo, they had a hammer price of $12,000 plus buyers premium (usually from 20 to 30% of hammer price) and had an estimate of up to $25,000. Keep in mind that this is in 2006 and the inflation rate since then has been almost 30% in total. One of the chairs still retains the Christie's label as can be seen in the last photo.
These Pierre Patout french art deco dining chairs feature an open arm design, flared legs, scalloped Mahogany sections which make up the seat base and seat back. Covered in soft and sumptuous velvet which has a light orange-brown color. Such incredible craftsmanship and quality materials that you just don't find in todays products.
This set is priced for the set of 6 chairs, if you wish to purchase only a pair contact us to discuss.
Such an amazing set for art and design collectors or interior designers looking for something truly special for best client. These chairs have incredible heft - you can feel the quality at first touch. These chairs are just exquisite - get them while they are still available and before someone else does.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER:
Pierre Patout (1879-1965), was a close friend and associate of Jacques-Emile Ruhlman, creating designs for the 1925 Exposition of Decorative Arts. Patout designed the main gateway of the Exposition on the Place de la Concorde, and also The Hôtel du Riche Collectionneur, one of the most popular attractions at the Exposition. Inside it displayed new furniture designs of Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, as well as Art Deco fabrics, carpets, and a painting by Jean Dupas.
His success at the Exposition led to commissions for transatlantic ocean liners including the Ile de France, L'Atlantique, and, the most famous of all the SS Normandie. The highlight of the Normandie interior was the dining room, illuminated with rows of lighted columns of Lalique crystal.
