About the Item

Guillerme et Chambron - iconic French designers of the post-war era - shaped a new language of furniture design that was both sculptural and deeply connected to everyday life. Working together under the Votre Maison label, Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron infused their pieces with warmth, craftsmanship, and a sense of individuality that set them apart from more industrial mid-century modernism. The legendary duo placed equal emphasis on function and form, creating an aesthetic as staid as it was - and continues to be - visually arresting. This rare set of six dining chairs highlights the duo’s talent with clarity and confidence. The carved oak frames bring forward the duo’s unmistakable approach to shape: strong architectural lines softened by organic detail. The slightly tilted backrests introduce comfort, while the sabre-shaped legs give each chair a poised stance. A unique feature of this model is the distinct carved curvatures of the backrests, an element that adds rhythm and character to the silhouette. A cross structure supports each seat, reinforcing the model while also showcasing expert craftsmanship. Upholstered in a textured bouclé, the seats introduce a soft tactile contrast to the smooth, firm oak, enhancing comfort without diminishing the integrity of the original design. Every component, from joinery to proportion, feels deliberate. These chairs demonstrate an understanding that beauty and usability are inseparable. The set of chairs offers a cohesive presence that elevates a dining space through material richness and refined quality. They embody Guillerme et Chambron’s commitment to making furniture that feels grounded and expressive. This set stands as an enduring example of French mid-century design at its best. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Due to the nature and age of the materials, the chairs may have some marks, scratches, and discolouration. The cushions have been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops. In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron in Lille. The following year Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinet maker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a woodworking shop and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their distinctive creativity, originality, and quality, the Votre Maison quickly became well-known. The Votre Maison marked the history of French design. Guillerme drew the furniture designs while Chambron played the part of salesman, welcoming and advising clients. The power duo was complemented by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of the manufacturing. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. Well-crafted chair back, polished wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. Votre Maison continued to produce furniture right into the 20th century, with Jacques’ son Hervé Chambron, a designer and graduate of the École Boulle, having taken the reins in 1983. ~H.

Guillerme et Chambron, Chaise Véronique, Set of Four Side Chairs, France, C 1970
By Guillerme et Chambron, Votre Maison
Located in New York, NY
Robert Guillerme studied design and architecture at the École Boule, graduating in 1934. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops. In 1948 Jacques Chambron left his work as a painter and decorator on the Rue Nollet in Paris, and relocated his family to join Guillerme. The two had met in 1940 while imprisoned by the Germans in East Prussia and bonded over, among other more obvious things, their shared passion for design. In 1949 the pair discovered Émile Dariosecq, a master cabinet maker who had a shop in the city, and who was willing to produce their designs. The three started Votre Maison. The association was destined to be as influential as prolific. Not only did Votre Maison produce over two thousand models during the later half of the twentieth century, it also left an indelible stamp on design of the 50s, 60s and 70s. The company’s output served as a model for a vast field of livable contemporaneous design. The soul of Guillerme et Chambron’s work was in the company’s name (“Your House"). Their focus was as keenly attuned to functionality—furniture’s use in daily life—as to the creation of innovative design. For the pair of designers the home was envisioned as a place where the family could live both comfortably and in aesthetic harmony. Robert Guillerme, who designed most of the work, possessed a limitless creative ambition, producing designs for everything from grand dressers and sideboards to the smallest elements of a space, such as pedestals, shelving, benches, and lighting. This steady output of beautiful furniture bucked convention not merely in the equal emphasis Guillerme placed on function and aesthetics, but in the almost paradoxical creation...
