Set of Six Sculptural Olavi Hänninen “King’s Chairs” in Solid Elm, Finland, 1970s A sculptural set of six “King’s Chairs” by Olavi Hänninen, crafted in solid elm with the iconic crown-shaped backrest and warm Nordic patina. This sculptural set of six “King’s Chairs,” attributed to Finnish designer Olavi Hänninen, was produced in the 1970s and executed in solid elm—a rarer and more refined hardwood variation of this iconic model. Elm is prized for its expressive grain patterns, warm natural tone, and exceptional strength, giving the chairs a powerful material presence and far greater longevity than the more common pine versions. The design is defined by its crown-shaped backrest, carved from a thick plank into three rounded peaks, combined with a large elongated oval cut-out that introduces lightness and a distinctly architectural silhouette. The hand-shaped legs and subtle asymmetries reflect Nordic folk craftsmanship and the rustic-modern design language Hänninen is known for. Each chair displays a beautifully developed patina, with natural variations in tone and grain that emphasize the authentic character of solid elm.
