About the Item

This rare set of six dining chairs was designed by the Danish designers Søren Nissen and Ebbe Gehl. The chairs were produced by the French manufacturer Ebénisterie Seltz for only a short period of time in the 1980s. This particular model was numbered FCH 1A and it was made of solid beech wood with details in darker stained elm wood. The dynamic, diagonal lines of the base give the chairs a sculptural and attractive appearance. The triangular shape of the backrest is repeated in the decorative top detail in elm wood. Slightly curved seat consisting of three panels in beech wood. The geometric details and lines make this a visually attractive chair from all angles. The chairs are in good original condition, with a natural patina on the wood. Minor scratches in the wood in the seating part of a number of chairs. Both Søren Nissen Ebbe Gehl were trained cabinetmakers at Rud Rasmussen’s workshop in Copenhagen and started their partnership in 1970. Given their cabinetmaker backgrounds, many of their designs are marked by beautiful workmanship using wood as a raw material. The award-winning duo have received international recognition and their designs have been exhibited in Europe, Japan and the USA. Ebénisterie Seltz was a small, family run wood workshop in the Alsace region. Among other designers, Pierre Chapo selected this company to produce some of his designs in the 1970s and 1980s. Mostly working with solid oak and elm wood, their way of working was based on great respect for the material and the use of elegant, simple and functional shapes.
