Suite of three Italian neoclassical polychrome painted side chairs, circa 1780
Antique, excellent and rare suite of three Northern Italian (probably Venice) Neoclassical side chairs. There is a masculinity in the proportions that exhibits the bold expression of the Northern Italian countryside. The polychrome burgundy decoration on yellow ground retains the original paint. The chairs are constructed with an angular, open backrest, upholstered seat and are raised on waisted circular tapered fluted legs that end in turned ball footings.
Condition: Good antique condition commensurate with age and use. Sturdy. Rubbing and chipped losses to the painted surface. Old reinforcements. Seat blocks replaced. Upholstery renewed with celadon velvet.
