About the Item
Two Royal Designers for Industry, one from the world of furniture design, and one from the world of Formula 1 racing car design collaborated. With an almost impossibly thin profile, the Surface chair is made from carbon fibre, using cutting-edge technology developed by Formula 1 racing engineers to create a seat with perfect proportions and seamless surfaces. Defining the ultramodern aesthetic it is hard to see how the design could be surpassed as the purest, most refined archetype.
The design was strongly influenced by the Eames glass fibre chair designs of the 1950s and the way they supported the body. In particular the way they look from the back, which is mostly how you see a chair. The chair is very light, both in weight and form and getting the material to work structurally with such small legs is very difficult.
Dimensions: L470mm × D500mm × H800mm, seat height 440mm. Materials: Woven carbon fibre, lacquer and carbon fibre (legs).
