About the Item

A set of four dining chairs by Guillerme et Chambron for Votre Maison Curved and profiled backrest Four feet joined by spacers on the sides and in the middle Oak and reupholstered fabric Circa 1960 Assembled with trunnions Guillerme et Chambron, this duo with an inventive design shakes up the codes of furnishing in the 50s. Robert and Jacques first met in 1940 in a stalag in East Prussia. Prison-born, they become friends, but the first post-war years separate them. Graduated from the Boule school in 1934, Robert Guillerme puts his talent at the service of the Rogier workshops, a large house in the Lille region. Jacques Chambron, a graduate of the School of Arts Appliqués in Reims, has his own painter-decorator studio in Paris. In 1948, Chambron and his family left the capital to settle in Lille. The two men, who met there, then cross paths with Emile Darioseq, owner of a cabinetmaker’s workshop in search of new opportunities: Your house was born one year later, in 1949. Guillerme designs the furniture, Chambron plays the role of salesperson by welcoming and advising customers, and the Darioseq workshops take care of the manufacturing. Together, they define a new concept of furnishing. Buffets, tables, and chairs are cheap, robust, and traditional (see the student office model in solid oak and the table with its 6 chairs in solid oak and cane). Worked backs, waxed wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. Guillerme and Chambron were as prolific as they were detailed, producing more than 2,000 pieces in the second half of the 20th century out of a former gun factory. Their furniture, which was mostly made with different tones of waxed oak, adhered to the trends of design that emerged after the war: mid-century modernism. European furniture in the postwar period largely prioritized function as much as it did form and lacked any unnecessary ornamentation. Guillerme and Chambron wanted people to actually use their furniture, not just look at it. That design philosophy was a pillar of their company, its name translating to “your house” in French. Their signature touches included ornate tiles, hidden drawers and vibrant textiles on pieces such as desks, tables, shelving, lighting, benches and other seating. One of Votre Maison’s most famous and popular pieces was the Grand Repos armchair, a stately, high-backed wide piece with a skeletal oak frame, six spindles and plush cushions. Helped by the ceramist Boleslaw Danikowski, they mix wood and tiles: a real success. In the 70s, Hervé Chambron, Jacques’s son, also a graduate of Ecole Boule, joined Votre Maison and created his own creations when his elders retired in 1983. The company is liquidated in the year 2000.

Maison Baguès, “Urn with Flowers”Lamp circa 1950
By Maison Baguès
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
Maison Baguès, “Urn with Flowers”Lamp circa 1950 French Glass & Gilt Metal «Vase of Flowers» two-lights Table Lamp Designed as a both faces crystal vase which crystal leaves and flowers on a gilt-metal stem Since the 1860s, the renowned French luxury lighting atelier Maison Baguès has been pro-ducing pieces that are highly valued across the world. Each piece is hand assembled, using traditional techniques. Depending on the source you consult, French luxury lighting atelier Maison Baguès was launched in Paris in 1860, or in Auvergne in 1840. Still active today, the brand remains an exemplar of French design savoir-faire. Under founding metalsmith Nöel Baguès’s direction, Maison Baguès began as a specialist in liturgical bronze candlesticks, before late-19th-century technological advancement—and the 1880 managerial arrival of Nöel’s son, Eugène—saw the broadening of the atelier’s range to include bronze fixtures for newly-invented electrical lighting. Expansion drove the following decades, as Eugène, together with his own sons, Victor and Robert, continued to swell out the atelier’s Art Deco-tinged output. By the 1920’s, Maison Baguès’s collections included gilded iron fixtures—the iconic Parrots & Foliage hand-strung crystal chandeliers and complexly carved wall sconces —as well as metal gates, accent tables, and stair bannis-ters (which still adorn Parisian locales like the Porte Dorée and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées). Delicate and detailed, Maison Baguès’s bespoke designs and metalwork attracted the social elite. In 1928, eminent bourgeoisie décorateur Armand-Albert Rateau famously used a se-lection of Maison Baguès accessories to furnish the townhouse interiors of haute couturist Jeanne Lanvin. Beyond Rateau, the atelier was commissioned by many chic interiors icons...
