About the Item

Perret et Vibert, lounge furniture with Noh masks bamboo end of the 19th century. This set composed of a bench, two chairs and a stool from the French manufacture Perret et Vibert bears witness to the growing influence of Asia in the decorative arts of the 19th century. Made of bamboo feet and roots, lacquer panels and "Noh" type ceramic masks, this set stands out against simpler sets with quadrangular shapes. Indeed, to break all monotony and give more originality to the structures, Perret and Vibert have multiplied on the backs and spacers the cuts of geometric shapes that break the straight lines. The small "Nô" masks, made of ceramics, add to the originality of the whole and contribute to the "Japonisme" then so much in vogue, affirmed in the creation of this furniture. The lacquer panels also add an exotic touch to the seats. As was customary, Perret and Vibert recovered pieces of panels and chests, which they cutout to integrate black and gold lacquers on the fronts of their furniture and seats. The seats and backrests are covered with modern orange velvet. Ernest Vibert and Robert Perret founded the Maison des Bambous in 1872 at 33, rue du Quatre Septembre in Paris. From the beginning, the company has offered a variety of objects in Chinese and Japanese style as well as many pieces of furniture, chairs and tables made of bamboos and braided rushes. The Maison des Bambous based its international reputation on important official customers whose houses and winter gardens it furnished. Measurements (H x W x D): sofa 112 x 131 x 58 cm chairs 98 x 52 x 35 cm stool 42 x 50 x 50 cm.
