Rare “Fledermaus” Seating Set
Vienna, circa 1905
Designed for Cabaret Fledermaus, Vienna Secession
A rare and historically significant Art Nouveau seating ensemble designed by Josef Hoffmann, founding member of the Vienna Secession and one of the most influential figures of early modern design. This celebrated “Fledermaus” set was conceived for the legendary Cabaret Fledermaus in Vienna, an iconic Gesamtkunstwerk that embodied the avant-garde ideals of the Wiener Werkstätte.
The set consists of five pieces:
one sofa, two armchairs, and two side chairs. All elements reflect Hoffmann’s distinctive geometric language, combining architectural clarity with refined proportions and restrained ornamentation. The sculptural forms, gently curved backs, and precisely constructed wooden frames illustrate Hoffmann’s transition from Art Nouveau toward early Modernism.
Executed with exceptional craftsmanship, the ensemble exemplifies the Wiener Werkstätte philosophy of uniting art, design, and craftsmanship. “Fledermaus” furniture ranks among Hoffmann’s most iconic and sought-after designs, closely associated with one of the most important cultural interiors of early 20th-century Vienna.
Dimensions:
The sofa measures approximately 30 inches high, 46 inches wide, and 20 inches deep.
Each armchair measures 30 inches high, 21 inches wide, and 17.5 inches deep.
The side chairs measure 30 inches high, 20 inches wide, and 19 inches deep.
The seat height throughout the set is approximately 20.5 inches.
Condition:
Very good vintage condition consistent with age and use. The materials and finishes are in very good condition and have been professionally restored in our Vienna workshop using original, period-appropriate conservation methods. The pieces retain excellent structural integrity and authentic surface character, preserving the historical integrity of the ensemble. A detailed condition report is available upon request.

Significance:
Original “Fledermaus” seating by Josef Hoffmann is extremely rare and highly sought after by private collectors and major institutions. Comparable examples are held in museum collections such as the MAK Vienna and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
