An Anglo-Dutch 19th Century Walnut Carved 5 Piece Parlor Set, After Daniel Marot
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A Fine Anglo-Dutch 19th Century Baroque Style Ornately Carved Walnut Five Piece Parlor - Salon Suite, After Daniel Marot (French-Dutch, 1661–1752); comprising of a settee, two armchairs and two side chairs. The intricately pierced high-backs carved frames with scrolled and floral designs, curved armrests and cabriolet conjoined legs. Circa: 1890. Measures: Settee height: 54 3/4 inches (139.1 cm) Settee width: 70 3/4 inches (179.7 cm) Settee depth: 24 inches (61 cm) Armchairs Height: 52 inches (132.1 cm) Armchairs Width: 28 inches (71.1 cm) Armchairs Depth: 21 1/2 inches (54.6 cm) Side chairs Height: 50 inches (127 cm) Side chairs Width: 21 1/2 inches (54.6 cm) Side chairs Depth: 20 1/2 inches (52.1 cm) Seat height: 20 3/8 inches (51.8 cm). Daniel Marot or Daniel Marot the Elder (1661–1752) was a French-born Dutch architect, furniture designer and engraver at the forefront of the classicizing Late Baroque Louis XIV style. He worked for a long time in England and the Dutch Republic, where he was naturalised in 1709. Born in Paris, he was a pupil of Jean Le Pautre and the son of Jean Marot, who was also an architect and engraver. Marot was working independently as an engraver from an early age, making engravings of designs by Jean Bérain, one of Louis XIV's official designers at the Manufacture des Gobelins, where far more than tapestry was being produced. The family were Huguenots and were part of the wave of émigrés who left France in the year of the Edict of Fontainebleau and Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) to settle in Holland. Daniel Marot brought the fully developed court style of Louis XIV to Holland, and later to London. In the end, the English style which is loosely called "William and Mary" owed much to his manner. In the Dutch Republic, Marot was employed by the Stadthouder, who later became William III of England; in particular, he is associated with designing interiors in the palace of Het Loo, from 1684 on. Though his name cannot be attached to any English building (and he does not have an entry in Howard Colvin's exhaustive Dictionary of British Architects) we know from his own engraving that he designed the great hall of audience for the States-General at the Hague. He also decorated many Dutch country-houses, introducing the “salon” and popularizing ornamented ceilings in The United Provinces/ Netherlands. State bed, designed by Daniel Marot, engraving, ca 1702 In 1694, he traveled with William to London, where he was appointed one of his architects and Master of Works. In England his activities appear to have been concentrated at Hampton Court Palace, where he designed the garden parterres, which were swept away in the following generation and have been restored at the end of the 20th century. His designs for the Great Fountain Garden survive. Much of the furniture, especially the mirrors, guéridons and state beds, in the new State Rooms readied for William at Hampton Court bears unmistakable traces of his authorship; the tall and monumental embroidered state beds, with their plumes of ostrich feathers, their elaborate valances and cantonnieres agree very closely with his later published designs. After William's death Marot returned to Holland where he lived at the Noordeinde 164 in The Hague from 1720 until his death in 1752. The house with his salon, kitchen, hallway and possibly some of his ceilings still exists. We owe much of our knowledge of his work to the folio volume of his furniture designs published at Amsterdam in 1712. Not surprisingly the designs show strong French and Dutch influences; what reads as their "English" look is more probably the result of Marot's court style on other London designers. Marot was a nephew of Pierre Gole...

Prof. Karl Nothelfer * 14 June 1900 – 20 May 1980 Since the beginning of the 15th century, the Nothelfer family of carpenters has lived continuously in the former town of Überlingen. Every carpenter at that time mastered all aspects of woodworking, and the Nothelfers were no exception. They could even carve altars and figures and adorn them with gold, silver and paint. (Churches in Owingen and Hödingen). Some family members lived and worked in Hedingen or Hödingen, as the jubilarian Karl Nothelfer did in 1975. However, his father, Karl Anton Nothelfer, was the eldest of seven siblings and was therefore able to take over his father's carpentry business in Überlingen. However, Karl Anton Nothelfer was unable to take over his father's carpentry business in Überlingen. Instead, he moved to the industrial town of Singen with his young wife, Rosalie Hanner, and founded his own carpentry workshop. Hohenzollern in 1896, and he moved to the former Poststraße, where he founded his own carpentry workshop. He had a high sense of quality and form, and was a member of the German Werkbund before 1914. Karl Nothelfer and his three siblings grew up in such an environment. After attending primary and secondary school in Singen, Karl learnt the carpenter's trade in his father's workshop, before moving on to the Badische Landes-Kunstschule in Karlsruhe. , where he studied architecture. The well-known furniture professor also worked there at that time: Fritz Spannagel (born Freiburg, 1891; settled Ittendorf Castle near Meersburg in 1938; died 1957). burg (died 1957). In 1928, the gifted young architect received a teaching assignment at the Karlsruhe School of Art, but he followed his teacher Spannagel to Berlin in the same year. Berlin. He worked there as a teacher from 1928 to 1945, becoming a professor in 1931. Berlin Tischler-Schule, later known as the Bauschule für Raumgestaltung. The furniture he created in Berlin gained international recognition through numerous exhibitions and lectures. He became nationally known and influential. His furniture designs ushered in a new era of German and European furniture design. European furniture design. At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937, Prof. Nothelfer was awarded the Golden Medal for his work in the furniture sector. For his work in the furniture sector. The first summary and evaluation of his furniture designs is presented in his seminal work, Das Sitzmöbel, published in 1942, was the first compendium of its kind in the world. world. In 1950, he published his second book, Furniture. Both books and a series of brochures were published by Verlag Otto Maier in Ravensburg. Karl Nothelfer continued to work intensively on seating furniture design in the years after 1945. In 1950, he made the important invention of the two-legged skid-base chair, which has since become widely accepted. Even the most distinguished American furniture companies, such as Miller and Knoll International, , use the skid as the main design feature of desks and chairs. At the same time, N. was pioneering in redesigning German school furniture and seating for industry. He succeeded in adapting his furniture designs, which originated in woodworking and craftsmanship, to modern technical possibilities of the industry. He thus became a leading figure in the redesign of schoolroom furnishings. The architect Nothelfer reflects on his own work, that his main contribution was in the field of seating furniture, although this was not really his profession. After the war, Prof. Nothelfer, like so many others, had to start again from scratch. He settled in his hometown of Hödingen on Lake Constance in 1945, working as a freelance architect. involved in all areas of construction in the years after the war. As early as 1935, he had designed many examples of American prefabricated buildings and recommended serial housing, This was at a time when no one in Germany was even thinking about mass production. He developed Several types of mass-produced houses were manufactured in Baiersbronn. More than 800 of these houses were built in France (types Paris, Provence and Normandie). In 1946, as part of the reparations in Strasbourg, there was an exhibition of houses featuring Swedish, Danish and French designs. These included Swedish, Danish, Finnish, English and German houses, and the French occupation For this exhibition, six different types were sent from the French occupation zone. Nothelfer's house design was considered the best in the exhibition. Karl Nothelfer was also involved in developing chipboard. In 1946, he founded the first magazine, Bauen und Wohnen (Building and Living), after the war, and remained its co-editor for many years. By presenting his own work, he interpreted what the magazine's essence was. interpreted the essence of what the magazine wanted to be. Building in order to live in it and live humanely in the built environment. Karl Nothelfer designed his houses The furniture and ground plans were designed with the need for living in mind. Vintage and Antique Living Room Sets for Sale on 1stDibs

Your living room — how your antique and vintage living room furniture is arranged, what style of furniture you’ve chosen, what kind of decor best suits your needs — should be an opportunity to express yourself as well as to unabashedly show off your design taste and preferences.

Common wisdom used to declare the kitchen the hub of the house. These days, the living room seems to have assumed the role of domestic focal point. Unlike the Victorian parlor, stiffly furnished and reserved for guests, today’s living room is a central place for reading and displaying your books, conversation and, well, living, with furnishings that lend themselves to both casual lounging and elegant entertaining.

A living room that doesn’t double as a family or TV room is a luxury. But even if the electronics are elsewhere, this is a hard-working, well-used space.

In an era that sees an increasing number of professionals working from home, sometimes your living room is multifunctional in ways you never thought possible. A corner of this room might be a designated home office, outfitted with a desk, your laptop and notebooks and, of course, the best possible lighting for those unscheduled Zoom calls. Perhaps you’ve sectioned off an area with side tables and armchairs for entertaining small groups while another corner of the room is home to a cozy reading nook.

The appetite for antique and vintage furniture — sculptural mid-century modern case pieces crafted in teak and other dark woods, the sexy, sensuous seating of the 1970s — has only broadened in recent years, with design lovers treasure hunting online and on Instagram.

A Scandinavian modern living room set, featuring lounge chairs and sofas by the likes of Hans Wegner or Kaare Klint, will help you introduce quality craftsmanship characterized by gentle, organic contours into your space, while a Camaleonda sofa by legendary Italian designer Mario Bellini will dazzle with its chunky form and convenient modular setup.

On 1stDibs, find an extraordinary collection of antique and vintage living room furniture inclusive of Space Age living room sets, other clever and provocative furnishings of the 1950s and ’60s, postmodern pieces and much more.
