About the Item

One of a kind and amazing set of 5 “Peter” chairs, designed by Niels Koefoed for Koefoed’s Hornslet, all signed. The matching table is offered separately. The “Peter” chair by Niels Koefoed, designed in 1956, is a quintessential example of mid-20th-century Scandinavian design, distinguished by its meticulous attention to form. Its frame is crafted from rosewood, a material that not only lends it a warm aesthetic but also exceptional durability and strength. Its light and organic style has made it a worldwide success. The chair's design is characterized by the fluidity of its lines and the ergonomics of its backrest. The light-colored upholstered seat contrasts with the dark wood, further enhanced by the contrast between the smooth, polished finish of the wood and the texture of the fabric. From a technical standpoint, it employs a precise assembly design that ensures the chair's stability without the need for visible hardware, a typical feature of Scandinavian design, which seeks the harmonious integration of components. The attention to detail in the wood finish also demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship, where each piece is individually worked to highlight the wood's natural beauty. We also have the matching table and chairs, by the same designer, as you can see in one of the photos. It has two extensions and is in very good condition. If you need more information, please don't hesitate to contact us. Niels Koefoed (1926-2000) Koefoed was born into a family dedicated to furniture design and manufacturing. His father, Einar Koefoed, had opened a furniture factory in Hornslet, Denmark, in the 1920s, Koefoed’s Møbelfabrik. In the 1950s and 60s, the company became well-known for Niels Koefoed’s popular dining chairs. One of Koefoed’s first designs to receive significant attention was the Peter dining chair of 1957. The chair’s appeal lay in its light and minimalist style, with a comfortable curved back. It appears that Koefoed named the chair after his son. In 1964, Koefoed created his most iconic design: the Eva dining chair, named after one of his daughters. An He described the tall, graceful chair as feminine, with full hips and narrow shoulders. It was part of a series of dining chairs named after important women in Koefoed's life, the other two being the Ingrid chair, also named after a daughter, and the Lis chair. Together, the chairs were known as "the three lovely girls." In 2004, Koefoeds Møbelfabrik relocated to Thailand, where it continued to manufacture furniture. Many of its classic mid-century designs, such as the Peter and Eva chairs, are reproduced today by the Danish company CASØ Furniture. Niels Koefoed's furniture is a testament to mastery through dedication. On Modern Scandinavian Style and Design When we refer to Nordic style or Scandinavian design, we are talking about the countries of Northern Europe, specifically Sweden and Norway, but also including Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. This style is characterized by its functionality, utility, formality, minimalism, timelessness, and durability, as well as the use of local and environmentally friendly materials, such as wood. The stylistic elegance we know today arose from the influence of early 20th-century decorative movements (Art Nouveau and Jugendstil) and the simplicity and purity of the interwar artistic movements (Constructivism, De Stijl, the Bauhaus, etc.). The 1930 Stockholm Exhibition was a significant point of reference, where designers blended local materials with modernity to create comfortable and luminous spaces. The concept of "Scandinavian design" was coined in 1954, due to an exhibition that toured North America with that name, promoting both the lifestyle and decoration of the Nordic countries.
