About the Item

1940s Bentwood Armchairs by Koželka Kropáček – Prague, Czechoslovakia Original Upholstery An exceptional pair of bentwood armchairs designed in the 1940s by renowned Czech modernists Karel Koželka and Antonín Kropáček. Produced in Prague during the early postwar design renaissance, these sculptural lounge chairs showcase the elegant craftsmanship and ergonomic innovation that earned the duo a Silver Medal at the 1946 Milan Triennale. The chairs feature refined bentwood frames—likely beech—expertly shaped into soft, flowing curves that define the armrests and legs. They retain their original 1940s upholstery, a coral-orange textile with an ivory vine motif and detailed ivory piping. This fabric is an authentic, visually striking feature seldom found intact on pieces of this age. However, while the original upholstery holds significant historical and aesthetic value, reupholstery is strongly advised. The textile has aged gracefully but no longer meets modern standards of durability or comfort. The chairs remain structurally sound, with a rich patina and only minor signs of surface wear consistent with age. These armchairs are a superb example of Central European mid-century design—rare, collectible, and full of quiet character. Ideal for restoration, they offer the opportunity to preserve their historic integrity while bringing them into a new era of use. A perfect acquisition for collectors, interior designers, or design enthusiasts seeking authentic Czechoslovakian modernism with the option to personalize through fabric selection.
