About the Item

This is an original Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, models 670 and 671, initially designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956. These are exceptional early examples and feature freshly-refinished Brazilian Rosewood panels. The upholstery is done in a dark brown leather. The down-filled cushions are completely original, and to find them intact is becoming increasingly rare. The shock mounts have labels indicating that they were redone by Herman Miller in recent years. The presence of three holes found under the armrests also indicates early production. The ottoman has boot glides as opposed to threaded glides, indicating circa first year production. The chair also has 1/8 inch threads on the base, a very special sign of extra early production. This was changed very early on, around the same time that the swivel ottoman was phased out. The skinnier threads were used on an earlier dining table (The Eames borrowed the base from the dining table to use on the chair) but were soon changed to 1/4 inch threaded glides to make them more robust, as the day to day use on a chair resulted in bending the glides. The label remnant also shows that it was a long foil label, yet another good sign of very early production. This is, therefore, about as early as it gets for an Eames lounge, aside from the coveted swivel ottoman examples. The lounge chair measures 32.75 inches long, 32.75 inches wide, and 31.5 inches high. It has a seat height of 15 inches and an arm height of 19 inches. The ottoman measures 21.5 inches long, 26 inches wide, and is 17.25 inches tall. There are some small scuffs and marks on the base, and the leather is broken-in and shows creasing, especially on the arms. The wood is moist and is in stellar shape. Overall, this set is in good condition with light wear. Please see photos.
