About the Item
Stunning 1970s Mid-Century Modern Italian Armchair / Lounge Chair made of ash wood and black open pore vegetable tanned leather. The elegant quadratic geometry, the high grade material and color choices as well as the expert craftsmanship evoke the designs of the Scarpa family (Carlo, Afra
Tobia), in particular, the Monk Chair series for Molteni.
The chair is constructed of thin, flat boards of ash wood, with pencil round edges. All the boards making the squared frame of the chair are oriented on the vertical plane, except for, by contrast, the arm rests. The arm rests are oriented in the horizontal plane and interact with the vertical supports with attractive exposed wood joinery.
A leather "hammock" is stretched and held in place by the wooden frame. On this is suspended the leather upholstered cushions. This gives the arm chair a suspended and airy feeling while still appearing solid and grounded.
The chair is reupholstered in new open pore, uncoated vegetable tanned full aniline hide. The soft and supple leather shows all the features of the natural product, thus maintaining harmony with the age of the frame, which has been thoroughly oiled.
