This refined 19th-century French armchair is a graceful example of the Louis XVI style, distinguished by its “chapeau de gendarme” backrest — a subtly curved crest with raised corners, lending architectural elegance to the silhouette. The carved beechwood frame retains its original lacquered finish, now beautifully worn with age to reveal an authentic, soft patina. Delicate fluting decorates the tapered legs, while rosettes and scrolling arm supports underscore the fine craftsmanship of the period. The seat, backrest, and padded armrests are upholstered in a golden-yellow cut velvet, richly patterned with raised floral damask on a pale background. The textile exudes warmth and opulence, complementing the frame’s gentle tones. Time has left its mark on the fabric — the armrest pads and the front edge of the seat show visible wear, with areas where the pile has thinned and small threadbare patches have appeared.
