About the Item

Italian mid-century furniture designers are known as masters of elegant organic forms. Seating models like this pair were created to highlight the spirit of rebirth of post-war furniture design characterised by clean lines and a free spirit. These lounge chairs’ sleek lines and stylish selection of materials immediately stand out, even making the classic combination of black and white interesting. As the model name suggests, the shape of the chairs is reminiscent of a kite, creating a sculptural and striking appearance that greatly adds to the visual interest of the pieces. The wide seats and armrests are not separated, rather the united to create an open and welcoming look. The slender tubular metal legs provide a lovely contrast against the softness of the upholstery. Thanks to the well-thought-out construction and proportions, the sitting comfort is also outstanding. Another interesting visual element is the hole at the bottom where the backrest meets the seat, this design choice lends the chairs a sense of airiness and highlights the design prowess of Radice. Through the silhouette, materials, and level of craftsmanship, the "Aquilone" model displays many of the qualities exemplifying why Luigi Radice was one of the most sought after designers in Italy during the mid-20th century. Defined by their unique charm, perfect execution, and exclusivity, this pair of lounge chairs is a true testament to the glory days of mid-century modernism in Italy and would make a perfect addition to an array of interior styles. Sculptural Lounge Chairs by Nino Zoncada for Frimar, Italy 1950s
By Nino Zoncada
Located in Utrecht, NL
The postwar boom years of the 1950s through to the 1960s were one of the periods of greatest influence of Italian designers. Design in the 50s paved a way to a more aesthetical approach to products as opposed to its utilitarian predecessors, resulting in exceptional pieces like these lounge chairs. Giovanni “Nino” Zoncada was an Italian furniture designer who worked extensively designing furniture and interiors for luxury ships. In the late 1940s, Zoncada collaborated with Gio Ponti in the interior design of the cruise liners Conte Biancamano and Conte Grande. Among his most famous furniture designs are these iconic and richly upholstered lounge chairs with relatively high and curved armrests. This pair of lounge chairs combines a luxurious dark velvet fabric...
