About the Item
The B35 armchair is a landmark in early modernist furniture, reflecting the Bauhaus designer’s groundbreaking exploration of tubular steel. Breuer sought to create seating that was visually light, structurally innovative, and physically comfortable—qualities that define the B35 to this day.
The chair’s construction is based on a cantilever principle: instead of resting on four legs, the seat and back appear to float on a continuous, free-spanning steel frame. This creates a gentle, resilient spring that responds to the sitter’s movements, offering a level of comfort unusual for furniture of the period. The wide, low seat, combined with supportive armrests and a slightly reclined posture, gives the B35 an inviting, lounge-like character.
Breuer paired the polished tubular steel frame with carefully crafted textile, cane, or leather elements, producing a striking contrast between industrial material and hand-finished detail. The result is an armchair that feels both technical and refined—an object that captures the Bauhaus ideal of uniting craft, art, and modern production.
This particular model retains "ICF made in w.germany" label.
Thonet furniture bearing a label that reads "Made in West Germany" and references "ICF" indicates an authentic piece manufactured in West Germany during a period, likely the 1970s or 1980s, when ICF (International Contract Furnishings) acted as the US distributor for Thonet products.
