About the Item

Introducing a rare piece of American Mid-Century Modern history: the George Mulhauser "Mr. Chair" bentwood lounge chair and ottoman set for Plycraft. This iconic set, in recently redone upholstery, is constructed from steel and bentwood walnut, and is the perfect complement to any Modern living or workspace. Both chair and ottoman swivel 360 degrees and the chair reclines creating a seating experience that is as versatile and comfortable as it is visually striking and architecturally fascinating. George Mulhauser was an American industrial designer who gained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for his furniture designs. He was one of the most important designers of the Mid-Century Modern era, and his designs were frequently featured in the pages of the most prestigious design publications of the time. Plycraft was an American furniture manufacturer founded in the 1940s, known for producing high-quality and stylish furniture. The company was particularly well known for its chairs and ottomans, which were often designed by leading designers of the time, including George Mulhauser. Plycraft was considered one of the most important furniture manufacturers of the mid-twentieth century, and their designs were often compared to those of Charles and Ray Eames. This iconic chair and ottoman set is a piece of Mid-Century Modern history, adding a touch of twentieth century elegance to any space. With it's dramatic stance, stunning walnut woodgrains and newer upholstery redone in accordance with the original material and tufted-scheme this Mr. Chair and Ottoman set is ideal for designers and collectors alike searching for an early, (more rare) upholstered arm chair. Add this one-of-a-kind piece to your collection today and elevate your home's aesthetic to new heights. ---Dimensions--- Chair Width: 36 in / 91.44 cm Chair Depth: 36 in / 91.44 cm Chair Height: 36 in / 91.44 cm Seat Height: 16 in / 40.64 cm Arm Height: 24.5 in / 62.23 cm Ottoman Width: 24.5 in Ottoman Depth: 20.5 in Ottoman Height: 16 in This expertly designed and crafted lounge chair is in overall very good condition and has received small repairs and upgrades throughout the years. The walnut bentwood shell, bases and ottoman show some minor veneer repairs (which can be seen clearly in the photos provided) as well as several scratches and nicks (the worst of which can be shown in the photos provided). With that said the wood is in overall very good condition considering it's age and the walnut woodgrains are truly stunning in natural light. The vinyl, redone by the previous owner in 2020, shows no tears, stains or odors whatsoever. The mechanism that allows for adjustment of the angle of recline works exactly as designed and the chair spins 360 degrees as does the ottoman. This iconic chair and ottoman are ultra comfortable, structurally sound and ready for decades more of use. Please view all photos and video for details on this set's current condition.
