About the Item
An expressive and sculptural lounge chair designed by Dutch designer Pieter van Velzen for Leolux in the early 2000s. Known as the “Bird of Paradise” or Paradijsvogel, this distinctive piece was conceived as a way to “navigate paradise like a bird”—a poetic notion translated into its daring silhouette and light, hovering stance.
The chair features a detachable leather sling seat that elegantly drapes over a three-point steel frame, with a matching triangular leather headrest that slides into place. The result is both ergonomic and theatrical. In original condition with visible wear, staining, and a split seam to the leather, all of which contribute to its lived-in character.
A rare and dynamic piece from one of the Netherlands’ most imaginative contemporary designers.
