About the Item

Functionalisme meets comfort. This robust and a bit brutalist lounge chair was designed in the 1960s by Dutch cabinetmaker Ate van Apeldoorn. He founded his own production company in 1958 'Houtwerk Hattem.' The listed chair, which he called 'stokkenstoel' (stick chair), has an ingenious construction and a high degree of finishing. The production of these designs stopped after a few decades. The listed frames were made by van Hattem in our commission in a limited edition of 10 (year 2020). The chairs have the original measurements, and are made by the same cabinetmaker at van Hattem, that worked with Ate van Apeldoorn during the 1960s. The frame is executed in solid pine, ash and two saddle leather slings. We have hand picked the high quality saddle leather that our upholster used to create the two slings for seating and back. The leather is treated with a special wax coating for the first spatters and use, as is the wood. Please note: For most international shipments, the piece(s) will be fully dismantled for shipment unless we will mention otherwise. We will provide a detailled assembly instruction. Ate van Apeldoorn (1933-2020) was a cabinetmaker at heart, and had a solid feeling for the perfect proportions in a design. Van Apeldoorn’s approach to timber was built on a large understanding and respect for the material at hand. His body of work should be seen in the context of the Dutch functionalisme that came alive in the early and mid 20th century with Architect Gerrit Rietveld and artists as Piet Mondriaan and Bart van der Leck. 'Het Nieuwe Bouwen' in Dutch, a style that was rational and efficient, has been an essential and influential part of all Dutch design that followed, including the collection of van Apeldoorn.
