Kay Fisker “Canton” Woven Wicker Lounge Chair for Robert Wengler, Denmark 1950s
By Kay Fisker, Robert Wengler
Located in Utrecht, NL
While Kay Fisker is considered a leading exponent of Danish Functionalism, his present design shows why he was also a great influence on the Danish housing culture. This model was famously brought to Denmark from China by Fisker and there manufactured by Robert Wengler. Having trained architects and designers such as Finn Juhl, Kay Fisker designed his furniture pieces with the greatest architectural precision and quality. This “Canton” is a one-of-a-kind design, with an immediately recognizable frame and wickerwork. The masterfully woven cane gives this chair an airy look, complimented by the loose, upholstered seat cushion that adds comfort and cosiness to complement the frame. From every angle, this chair is visually arresting; from the front to the sides and back, the curves and geometric lines provide plenty of visual interest. This chair has a distinct designer edge, with clear signs of a skilled architect. The straight lines are mainly in service of the structural stability, while the and the lower panel in the front are the creation of an equally skilled designer. The back is especially creative, as it flows down to form the armrests and then further down to the legs, creating balance between the curved and straight lines. Fisker, like many of his Danish contemporaries was highly skilled both as an architect and as a furniture designer, and the “Canton” is perhaps the best evidence of that. The manufacturer, Robert Wengler was a German craftsman who specialized in wicker furniture, and was appointed as a wicker maker to the Danish Crown in 1914. He was a Pioneer in working with rattan in the early 20th century and became the most skilful wicker-maker in Denmark. This chair is marked by his brand, R. Wengler. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some discolouration and marks of restoration on the cane. The lounge chair has been reupholstered recently in premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 33.46 in W x 37.59 in D x 38.18 in H; Seat height 18.5 in 85 cm W x 95.5 cm D x 97 cm H; Seat height 47 cm About the Designer: Kay Otto Fisker (born 14 February 1893 in Frederiksberg, died 21 June 1965) was a Danish architect and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. He was an exponent of a nationally shaped version of international functionalism. Fisker graduated from school in 1909 and attended the Academy of Fine Arts' School of Architecture from 1909 to 1920, when he graduated as an architect. During his studies he was employed at Anton Rosen's architect's office from 1912, in Stockholm with Sigurd Lewerentz and Gunnar Asplund in 1916 and with Hack Kampmann in Copenhagen from 1918. In 1915, in collaboration with Aage Rafn...

Scandinavian Modern 1940s Rattan Lounge Chairs by Tove Kindt-Larsen at Wengler
By Tove Edvard Kindt-Larsen, Robert Wengler
Located in Odense, DK
Set of early edition rattan lounge chairs designed by Tove Lindt-Larsen and made by Wengler, Copenhagen in the 1940s. Wonderful cushions with floral motifs. One chair retains original brass plaquette from Wengler, Copenhagen, Tove Kindt-Larsen (née Reddersen, 1906-1994) was one of the first female designers to emerge during Denmark’s ‘Golden Era’ in the mid-twentieth century. She is well-known for working with her husband, Edvard Kindt-Larsen (1901- 1982), but her own influence should not be underestimated. Her furniture was characterized by a fine sense of quality and a design language that responded to evolving tastes of the time. She was an early pioneer in rattan chairs and the use of molded plywood and well as moving away from designing room sets and instead conceiving individual pieces of furniture so that homeowners could curate their own spaces. An architect by training, with several years of furniture design under her belt, she embarked on a furniture design course at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, under the ‘godfather of Danish design’ Kaare Klint, where she met her husband. Edvard had already gained recognition for a grand-scale hotel project by the lakes of Copenhagen and, during their studies, the pair discovered their collaborative spirit and shared affinity for high-quality natural materials and complementary contrasts. They married in 1937 and established a joint design studio in 1945. Together, they broke the connection with Victorian furniture and designed everything from furniture to silverware, jewelry, rugs, textiles, wallpaper and even exhibitions and buildings, with a focus on functionalism throughout. Examples of their furniture include the Fireplace Chair (1939), the Pagoda Sofa...
