About the Item

This unique set features two early Papa Bear AP 19 chairs, designed by Hans J. Wegner and crafted by A.P. Stolen in Denmark around 1951. Priced as a pair, we are also open to selling them individually—please inquire for details. These original AP 19 chairs come with their original fabric and are in good to very good condition, ready for use. The fabric shows light signs of wear, but is in very nice condition overall. We can also have them reupholstered in the fabric you prefer. The chairs are very comfortable. The arms are crafted from teak, while the legs and framework are made from oak. There are minor marks or nicks on the undersides of the wooden legs, but overall, the chairs remain in very good, sturdy vintage condition. Hans Wegner (1914-2007) ranks among the most prolific furniture designers globally. His creations reflect a profound understanding of materials, construction methods, and practical use. While Wegner was an exceptional cabinetmaker with an in-depth knowledge of his materials, his primary goal was to craft expressive and captivating designs. Unlike his mentor, Kaare Klint, who adhered strictly to functionalism, Wegner's work radiates creativity and sculptural quality without sacrificing the core principles of functionality. At heart, Wegner was an idealist, tirelessly pursuing the perfect chair: “There is never one damn thing that cannot be made better.” However, he also recognized the impossibility of designing the 'perfect' chair, granting him the freedom to innovate extensively. He left behind over 3,500 sketches, with around 500 designs going into production.
