About the Item

A sculptural and highly expressive F784 Concorde lounge chair, designed in the 1960s by Pierre Paulin for Artifort. This iconic model exemplifies Paulin’s radical rethinking of seating as a continuous, organic form rather than a traditional construction of parts. The Concorde chair is defined by its dramatic, forward-leaning silhouette and enveloping leather shell, which appears almost carved rather than upholstered. The fluid contours follow the human body closely, creating a deeply expressive object that balances comfort with visual tension. Its low stance and strong graphic presence make it both a functional lounge chair and a statement piece within an interior. The leather has aged beautifully, developing a rich patina that enhances the sculptural qualities of the design and underlines its authenticity. The restrained metal base anchors the form, allowing the bold upper volume to take center stage. A quintessential example of postwar European avant-garde design, the Concorde remains one of Paulin’s most recognizable and collectible works. About the Designer Pierre Paulin (1927-2009) was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. Known for his innovative use of foam, stretch fabrics, and sculptural forms, Paulin fundamentally changed the language of modern seating. His work for Artifort in the 1950s and 1960s including models such as the Mushroom, Ribbon, and Concorde defined a new, organic modernism. Paulin’s designs are represented in major museum collections worldwide, including MoMA and the Centre Pompidou. Condition Good condition, with age appropriate wear. The leather shows an attractive, natural patina that enhances the character and depth of the piece.
