About the Item

An exceptional and highly collectible pair of early PK22 lounge chairs, designed in 1958 by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen. This is a rare first edition set, originating from the first owner, a detail that significantly enhances both provenance and historical value. The PK22 is widely regarded as one of Kjærholm’s most refined designsan almost sculptural expression of his philosophy that steel should be treated with the same respect as fine wood. The lightly curved stainless steel frame appears delicate yet is structurally precise, supporting the floating leather seat in a way that feels both architectural and effortless. The black leather has aged beautifully, developing a soft patina that complements the subtle wear on the stainless steel frame. The visual lightness, low profile, and perfectly judged proportions make the PK22 a timeless modern classic, equally at home in minimalist interiors, curated design collections, or museum level settings. This pair represents Danish modernism at its purest: restrained, intellectual, and quietly luxurious. About the Designer Poul Kjærholm (1929 – 1980) is considered one of the most important figures of Danish modern design. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Kjærholm developed a unique design language centered around industrial materials most notably steel combined with leather, canvas, and wood. His work is characterized by clarity, precision, and a deep respect for structure and material honesty. Today, Kjærholm’s designs are included in the permanent collections of major museums worldwide, including MoMA and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Condition Very good condition, with age appropriate wear. The leather shows a beautiful, natural patina, and the stainless steel frames display an attractive surface character consistent with careful use over time.
