About the Item

Sold and priced individually. A 1940s French oak armchair by René Gabriel, defined by its clean lines and inviting proportions. Originally designed in 1946 for Lieuvin, it was showcased at the 1947 Urban Planning and Housing Exhibition in Paris. The solid oak frame is expertly joined and paired with newly upholstered alabaster chenille cushions. With a gently angled slatted back and sculptural, open arms, the design strikes a perfect balance between structure and ease.  Published in René Gabriel: From Decorative Arts to Reconstruction. René Gabriel (1899–1950) was a French decorative artist renowned for his utilitarian yet elegant approach to furniture design, often focusing on practical, series-produced pieces. As both a member and president of the Societé des Artistes Decorateurs, Gabriel championed accessible and logical design, favoring clean lines and functional forms. He was also a dedicated educator, serving as a teacher and director at the École Nationale Supérieure.  His influence was profound, shaping mid-century design in post-war France and leaving a legacy of resilience and resourcefulness that resonated with generations of designers who followed. Condition: Great vintage condition, with minor scuffs to the oak frame. This chair has a metal spring seat, and the cushions have been professionally reupholstered by our team of restorationists in alabaster chenille fabric that has a soft, plush texture and luxurious feel.
