About the Item

A refined example of George Nakashima’s iconic craftsmanship, this ‘Cushion’ spindleback lounge chair was produced by Nakashima Studio in the 1960s. Constructed from solid American black cherry, the chair’s elegant silhouette showcases Nakashima’s signature interplay of clean geometry and organic warmth. Its vertical spindled back nods to traditional Windsor chairs, while the gently tapered legs and robust joinery reflect Nakashima’s dedication to both form and function. This piece is upholstered in a crisp Pierre Frey fabric, offering a soft contrast to the warm tones of the cherry wood. Included with the chair is a digital copy of the original order card, adding a layer of provenance and authenticity. George Nakashima (1905–1990), an architect by training and philosopher by spirit, was one of the foremost figures in 20th-century American design. Deeply influenced by his time in Japan and his studies of traditional joinery, Nakashima embraced a reverent, almost spiritual approach to woodworking. His furniture honors the natural integrity of the wood, often preserving its knots, grain patterns, and imperfections to express its inner life. From his studio in New Hope, Pennsylvania, Nakashima produced timeless works that seamlessly bridge Japanese aesthetics with American modernism. This lounge chair encapsulates his enduring legacy - a celebration of honest materials, fine craftsmanship, and a belief that furniture should quietly serve the soul. Provenance: This chair comes from the collection of the Craighead family, long-time residents of the Nakashima compound in New Hope, Pennsylvania. The Craigheads were close to George Nakashima and lived in the house he originally built for his own family. Their relationship with Nakashima was both personal and architectural, making this piece not only a beautiful example of his craftsmanship, but also a witness to a unique shared history.
