About the Item

This exceptional sofa and lounge chair set stands out as one of the very few comfortable designs by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. Created first in 1935, it marks a significant departure in Rietveld’s career as his first upholstered furniture piece. Commissioned and executed by Metz Co, the wooden frame of this set was crafted by Gerard van de Groenekan, Rietveld’s trusted carpenter. The set has been meticulously reupholstered in off-white boat canvas, a material historically used for such designs during that era. The canvas, known for its flat and tight weave, highlights the sharp, straight angles characteristic of Rietveld’s style. This deliberate choice of material reinforces the design’s architectural precision while offering durability and elegance. Produced and sold by Metz Co from 1935 to approximately 1975, production was just halted before or during the war. The designs production rights were later acquired by Cassina in the 1970s. However, Cassina was required to modify every measurement and angle of the design, resulting in a version distinctly different from Rietveld’s original when compared side by side. In 1953 a Metz&Co avertisement in goed wonen magazine announced the return of this chair. This particular set, purchased in the early 1950s, remained with its original owner until recently acquired. It features a unique variation of the armrest, presenting a flatter design not commonly seen, adding to its rarity. The Utrecht chair, part of the same design lineage, was often subject to experimentation by Metz Co to refine its form, resulting in numerous variants over the years it was produced. The interior structure of this set has been preserved as faithfully as possible, with the necessary restoration and reattachment ensuring long-term usability. Notably, the underside has been left open, allowing visibility of the original inner framework—a testament to its authenticity and craftsmanship. Finding a matching set of this sofa and two chairs in such excellent condition is extraordinarily rare. This piece, blending historical significance with everyday comfort, is a prized example of Rietveld’s legacy and a remarkable addition to any collection.
