About the Item
The Guard Armchair expresses the idea of protection and presence — its form inspired by the ceremonial sentry posts traditionally positioned outside royal residences and museums. Designed by Mondo Design Studio, this piece translates that symbolic stillness into an architectural, tactile armchair composition.
Each armchair features a continuous oval seat base with softened edges, fully upholstered in a dense, matte velvet with medium nap for a clean, monolithic volume. The seat geometry follows a rounded perimeter with a subtle convex crown that maintains ergonomic support while preserving a sculptural proportion when viewed from all angles.
The backrest emerges from the rear third of the seat, rising in a single sweeping arc that envelops the user. The outer surface of the backrest is clad in a deep-pile faux fur with directional texture and tonal gradation, engineered to create a soft diffusion of light and shadow across the surface. This contrast of fur and velvet evokes both refinement and primal comfort — a tension central to the piece’s character.
Structurally, the chair is built around an internal timber and composite frame, reinforced with cross-laminated birch supports. High-resilience foams of multiple densities are applied in layers to ensure longevity and comfort while maintaining the exterior precision of the form. The lower base terminates with a lacquered wood plinth in a dark espresso tone, slightly recessed to create a floating shadow line.
Each chair rests on a concealed glide system for floor protection and stability.
All materials are sustainably sourced in Portugal, with upholstery executed by master craftsmen specializing in bespoke finishing for collectible furniture.
Available as a matched pair, each piece is individually finished to ensure tonal consistency and visual balance when displayed side by side.
Custom fabric and color options — including mohair velvet, bouclé, or natural shearling — can be specified upon request.
