About the Item
A pair of Witco hand-carved “Conquistador” throne chairs like these are rare finds—synthesis of exotica fantasy, craftsmanship, and bold decorative presence.
Hand-carved from dark cedar, these chairs reveal a sculpted richness of texture: jagged reliefs, twisted supports, dramatic throne-like detailing—every corner a study in brute artistry. The restoration has been thorough: the underlying frame was disassembled, imperfections addressed, then lightly recolored and clear-coated to preserve both wood’s character and a lively patina that speaks to age, authenticity, and rustic majesty.
The upholstery draws the eye and stirs the imagination — high-quality, cruelty-free faux leopard fur that captures all the glamour, drama, and tactile allure of wild skin without compromise. The new covering renews the chairs’ visual power while complementing the cedar’s dark tone, merging fantasy decor with vintage collectibility.
These chairs were conceived in the jet-set 1960s, when exotic motifs reigned and tropical fantasy influenced American interiors—when Witco created works that blurred the line between furniture and set piece. They evoke memories of tiki bars, “Polynesian escapes,” and adventurous interiors, while retaining enough sophistication and artistry to be taken seriously among collectors today.
Condition is excellent. The restoration has preserved what drew collectors originally—ambitious hand carving, commanding heft, wild aesthetic—while ensuring structural soundness and renewed upholstery that holds its own visibly. Small age-appropriate marks do nothing to detract; instead, they affirm provenance and the lived life of these objets d’art.
These chairs are less about blending in than standing out. Positioned in a sunlit entry hall, paired at the long ends of a rustic dining table, or framing a dramatic fireplace, they command attention. They are throne seats for those who appreciate design with attitude, a touch of fantasy, and unquestionable presence. Owning this pair is not just owning chairs—it’s acquiring portable drama, atmosphere, and vintage exotica sculpted in cedar and fur.
Take a walk on the wild side, or maybe just have a seat there with scepter in hand. Each anthropomorphic gorilla-arm-chair has been recovered in high-quality, cruelty free, faux-fur that very much resembles the look and feel of leopard fur. Each high back is adorned with two hand-carved conquistador heads donning their iconic helmets. These highly collectible and hard-to-find thrown chairs were born of the jet-set era. The 1960s was the golden age of air travel and Americans were absolutely fascinated with “Exotica.” Ephemera from exotic tropical lands around South Asia were all the rage and gave birth to an explosion of tiki motifs in popular American culture.
This project was a complete tear-down and rebuild. Every section was unbolted and individually restored. This sinuous, dark cedar has been painstakingly detailed by our in-house restoration team to both preserve the patina and address any imperfections in the wood. Lightly recolored and clear-coated to accentuate and preserve the character. The seats and backs were professionally reupholstered, and the results speak for themselves. We're more than certain these will exceed expectations.
Robert Post Junior and Artist William Westenhaver Created Witco in 1959. The two capitalized on the exotica trend by creating lavishly bold, roughly carved wood furniture and decor. The delightfully dramatic furniture was so beloved during the period that Elvis created an entire “Jungle Room” in his Graceland home featuring Witco furniture! Witco remains a mainstay among collectors today. You can even see original Witco pieces still in use at Graceland, and other iconic tiki venues like Polynesian Gardens, the Hawaiian Inn, and the Aku Tiki Inn all located in Florida.
We have other Witco items available including a pair of these conquistador chairs with arms, Witco cat and a Witco dining table with matching chairs. All of these pieces are sold separate. Contact us if you are interested in any of the other Witco pieces.

Thomasville Embassy Asian Chinoiserie Dining Chairs
By Raymond K. Sobota, Century Furniture, Thomasville
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Set of six dining chairs by Thomasville, from the Embassy line, restored with integrity and style. Includes two arm-chairs and four side chairs.
Design is distinctly Chinoiserie, with an Asian-inspired silhouette: the crown is pagoda-notched, the blade-like backs curve inward following the spine’s shape for ergonomic support. Frames are solid wood, original finish clean with only minor blemishes; seat cushions have been re-upholstered in a neutral blended fabric combining tones of gray, brown, black and white—modern yet complementary to the frame tones.
Restoration has reinforced structural joints; the wood surfaces have been cleaned, polished, and detailed so the grain and contour shine. The overall presence is both elegant and bold—chairs that bring visual rhythm to a dining set, a media console, or curated furniture group. Only minor imperfections remain on frames. All chairs are sturdy.
Suited for interiors that prize material authenticity, decorative nuance, and vintage pedigree. These chairs perform well around classic dining tables, or paired with wood, lacquer, or mirrored surfaces. Ideal for collectors and designers who value style lineage, tactile form, and pieces that carry both beauty and useability.
