About the Item

Hans Von Klier Armchairs for Giuseppe Rossi Di Albizzate, Red Leather, Italy, 1970, set of two. These pair of Hans von Klier easy chairs, designed in 1970 for Giuseppe Rossi di Albizzate, exemplifies a seamless blend of the sculptural space age trend of the age. Resting on a glossy black fiberglass sculptural base, resembling the shadow of the seat above, the chair's structure achieves an almost weightless elegance, with a singularly curved seating piece wrapped in vibrant red leather, hovering effortlessly, creating a striking tension between solidity and levity. The form incorporates a distinctive "book-like" configuration, with the backrest and seat resembling a unified volume. Tone-on-tone stitching enhances the minimalist aesthetic, adding subtle depth and texture. From different perspectives, the chair presents varied geometric expressions. The rear view accentuates a striking balance between a rectangular backrest seemingly poised atop the triangular base, evoking a two-dimensional illusion of simplicity. This dynamic equilibrium is central to its visual appeal. The design recalls similar pieces of that period such as the “Sandwich” armchair by Giampiero Vitelli and Titina Ammanati for Brunati, reflecting the era's experimentation with sculptural forms. Hans von Klier's contributions to Italian design are equally significant in his collaborations with Olivetti and Ettore Sottsass, where he shaped innovative industrial and graphic designs. This chair reflects his ability to distill complexity into an elegant, functional object of modernist Italian design. We offer custom restoration and special reupholstering on request.
