About the Item

Exclusive and rare lounge set designed by Illum Wikkelsø, consisting of two “Apollo” lounge chairs and a matching ottoman. Produced by Ryesberg Møbler in Denmark in the 1970s, this set represents some of the most distinctive and characterful Danish design of the period. The “Apollo” model is defined by its bold, almost sculptural form. The deep, rounded leather seats are beautifully integrated into black lacquered bases made of moulded plywood, creating a striking contrast between soft, organic shapes and a clean, architectural structure. The braided leather edge around the seat highlights the high level of craftsmanship and adds a refined, exclusive detail. The lounge set is modular in design and can be arranged in several different configurations. The chairs may be positioned facing each other, parallel, or offset, depending on the space and desired expression, making the set both flexible and easy to adapt to a variety of interiors. The seats are upholstered in original cognac-coloured leather with a rich, natural patina that speaks to the age and quality of the materials. The deep seating and ergonomic shape provide exceptional comfort, while the ottoman completes the relaxed and inviting lounge experience. This lounge set works equally well as a strong statement piece in a living room, library or spacious entrance hall, while remaining highly functional for everyday use. Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was a significant figure in Danish furniture design, particularly known for his confident use of materials and his focus on functional comfort combined with a clear, elegant form language. Trained as a cabinetmaker and later at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, he worked in the space between classic Danish design traditions and more sculptural, modern expressions. Today, his furniture is regarded as highly desirable examples of mid-20th-century Danish design.
