About the Item

"Tonico" lounge chair and ottoman set, designed by Sergio Rodrigues around 1963, a remarkable piece of Brazilian modernist design. Crafted from stained freijó wood, the structure is robust yet elegant, perfectly complemented by fabric cushions and a luxurious natural leather headrest. The Tonico chair was created during the same period as the Chifruda armchair and shares design elements with the iconic "Poltrona Mole". Sergio envisioned this chair as a piece that would be widely accessible, suitable even for student housing. The goal was not only to meet the needs of people with few financial possibilities, but also to provide the utmost simplicity and comfort through its design. He named the chair after his brother-in-law, Tonico, who fell in love with its style. He wasn't someone with extravagant tastes, yet when he sat in the chair, he said, 'I don't need anything else, this is perfect.' He saw beauty and quality in its comfort and simplicity. Today, the Tonico chair, especially as a complete set with its matching ottoman, is a rare and sought-after piece, representing the essence of Brazilian modernist design. Sergio Rodrigues (September 22, 1927 – September 1, 2014) was a visionary Brazilian architect and designer who, alongside Joaquim Tenreiro and José Zanine Caldas, revolutionised Brazilian design by transforming it into a globally recognised industrial art form. His career peaked in the 1950s and 1960s during the modernist movement, where he masterfully integrated the Brazilian identity into his furniture.
