About the Item

A rare low rattan settee / armchair by Audoux Minnet in Golfe-Juan, dating from the 1950s-1960s, with a very modern shape and designed to be fitted with cushions. While little is known about the audacious modernist designers Adrien Audoux and Frida Minnet, the Franco-Swiss husband-and-wife duo created playful and unique decorative objects, dining chairs, wall sconces, and other furniture during the mid-20th century. Rejecting the opulence of Art Deco and the concept that seats, tables, and other furniture should be made from luxurious and exotic materials, Minnet and Audoux embraced a rustic style in their work, incorporating abaca, hemp rope, and other organic materials such as rattan, beech, and bamboo into their provocative designs. This low armchair is particularly characteristic of their creations and bears their signature in the form of the plaque "Audoux Minnet – Golfe Juan" decorated with the black kitten. It is in excellent condition, without any missing parts or damage. Height: 72 cm (height at the front of the seat: 24 cm) Depth: 72 cm Width: 60 cm The lack of a catalog from the Audoux-Minnet company allows only a partial understanding of their production. We do know, however, that it was certainly during their honeymoon that Adrien Audoux, originally from Franche-Comté, and Frida Minnet, originally from Switzerland, decided to establish their business in Cannes in 1929. Frida Minnet's father was himself a rattan furniture maker in Montreux, where his shop was located. He was therefore invaluable in helping the young couple set up their business, which primarily produced rattan furniture. In 1942, the company moved to Golfe-Juan, not far from Vallauris, where Jean Bonaudi also made rattan furniture. There, it is a Riviera clientele, made up of wealthy British or Americans attracted by the "French taste", who buy their furniture. In the 50s the company, better known as "le Doux Minet" and which takes as its symbol a black kitten, invents a new style of furniture which will make its reputation and whose frame, often in oak or beech, is entirely covered in raffia. The seats were then covered with raffia in checkerboard or large-mesh woven mats. Audoux-Minnet furniture bears an oblong plaque on the crossbars indicating either "Audoux-Minnet Furniture Factory - Golf-Juan," "Audoux-Minnet Furniture - Golf-Juan," or "Audoux-Minnet Rattan Furniture - 06. Golfe-Juan." It is interesting to note that the Audoux-Minnet company had no retailers and that only their showroom in Golfe-Juan offered their furniture. Pierre Bianchi took over the company in 1965 while continuing to create the same type of modernist furniture. The company closed its doors permanently in the 1990s.
