About the Item
The design of the “CP1” dates to 1963, an era when experimentation with new forms and materials was still ongoing in Italy. The results - as demonstrated by these chairs - preserved the sculptural forms and luxurious features that Italian design has been known for centuries.
The design of this pair is focused on elegant and measured proportions, balanced compositions, and refined décor elements including the exclusive materials. The straight lines of the leather slat backs and the curved shape of the frames exemplify this balance. Marco Comolli’s design language was always coherent with current times and congenial to the wisdom of furniture manufacturing, representing an outpost of strong innovation in the panorama of Italian craftsmanship. His pieces have a clear preoccupation with wood, and here the pairing of the beautiful wooden frames with the upholstered seats and back cushions show off both materials’ elegance. The solid wood frame and leather interact with each other uniquely, as most of the backrests and seats are made from the latter material. The patinated leather straps go through the black stained wooden parts creating a strong contrast and a rustic impression. The beauty of the wood in return is showed off on the crossing sides manifested in the flowing curves. The elegant aesthetic is completed by the voluptuous seat and back cushions upholstered in black leather. Their thickness is accentuated by the deep button tufting arranged in a square pattern. From the leather strapping to the unique frame and cushions, these lounge chairs are sure to draw all the attention.
Like their international contemporaries, Italian designers prized the marriage of form and function, but there are a few key differences that set Italian mid-century design apart. In Italy, good design was generally defined by unique forms, perfect execution, and a strong sense of exclusivity.

View AllSculptural Lounge Chair by Bas Van Pelt
Attr.
, The Netherlands, ca 1950s
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Utrecht, NL
This chair is full of exceptional features and details that make it a unique example of the creative overflow that defined mid-century modernism in Europe. The sculptural design is paired with the organicity of the material and various forms.
While the design is no short of exceptional solutions, they are also in service of functionality and comfort. This is a chair of extreme comfort, with multiple joinery and construction techniques. It is a little lower than the standard lounge chair, and that is exactly what provides great ergonomics and aesthetics. The seat and back form an obtuse angle which assures the perfect lounging position. The removable cushions upholstered in brown cow hide add even more comfort, while the fabric’s texture stands out nicely against the smooth wooden surfaces. The flowing structure displays beautifully curved lines and rounded edges that are broken by the straight wooden slats on the back. The perfect balance between the fluid and straight lines is typical of Bas van Pelt’s seating designs. The subtle swirl carvings in the front are playful details that further show off the high level of design and craftsmanship.
While the second half of the 20th century saw the takeover of mass production and many - now iconic - futuristic designs, this chair preserves the value and beauty of master craftsmanship and exquisite materials.

"Edouard" Lounge Chair by Guillerme et Chambron for Votre Maison, France, 1960s
By Guillerme et Chambron, Votre Maison
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Edouard” lounge chair is often described as a “caquetoire”, in other (non-French) words a conversation chair. This type of seating was an armchair style which emerged during the European Renaissance in France.
As the name suggests, this type of chair was meant for sitting for elongated periods to chat. Generally, these chairs were also highly regarded for their aesthetic value as well, which can also be said about this exceptional chair model. The Edouard is a sculptural model with a blonde oak frame that is characteristic of the French designer duo. The design showcases the wide variety of shapes and forms of the solid oak frame, from the hand-sculpted, organic curving lines to the straighter spindles consisting the backrest. Naturally, a conversation chair needs to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, therefore the back is slightly tilted, and the seat raised, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The light coloured upholstery beautifully complements the wood and the small loops of the bouclé highlight the smoothness of the frame’s surfaces. The French caquetoire chairs...
