Rare set of low-back "Stout" chairs of painted metal and Naugahyde in original condition, designed by Max Stout; 1950s. I have searched for this designer for years - he worked in High Point, North Carolina. (I have an image of a newspaper article with Max Stout and the Stout chair next to him but couldn't upload it due to size; I can message it to you though). There aren't many pieces he made that surface, and he is an obscure designer that quietly made incredible chairs. I have owned the high back Stout chair and ottoman (photographed) as well as the sofa. I've never seen the low back lounge chairs. They are statement chairs - and very comfortable and stylish. The original Naugahyde is very thick and in very nice shape - very minor blemishes. The metal has minor marks. The retail store's labels are still on the chairs. The tall back chair and ottoman I had, went to a client in San Francisco whose modernist house was recently featured in Atomic Ranch Magazine, and he said the chair is always commented on when guests are there. It is such a unique design and an excellent example of American Modern. They are comfortable and wide, and your arm rests nicely along the sculpted oak armrests. They are heavy and well made. Measures: 31" deep x 32" wide x 28.75" tall. Seat height: 15.25" Seating area: 20.25" deep to back cushion x 23" wide inside the armrests.
